Anyone who knows me knows that I like competition.
In particular, I like any sort of athletic competition. I’ve been like that since I was a kid.
I like sports and I like games. I like setting goals for myself and I like pushing myself and I like a challenge.
So I work out because I like the challenge and I enjoy seeing what I’m capable of.
I also work out because my brain needs it as much as my body.
Breaking a sweat and getting out of breath helps to reset my brain, especially at those times that the kids are really giving me a run for my money or my husband and I aren’t getting along particularly well or life in general is just getting to me.
I also exercise because it helps me sleep better and it keeps me disciplined in other areas of my life. I’m not sure why that is. There is probably some psychological term for this. Whatever it is, when I exercise regularly, I am way more focused and efficient than when I don’t.
Those are all good and healthy reasons to work out.
But there is one other big one.
I want to maintain my quality of life for as long as possible.
I want to be able to do all the stuff I’m doing now, even when I’m old(er).
Especially when I’m old(er).
I’m an older mom. Not so much compared to the parents of Number 1 and Number 2’s friends, but I gave birth to Numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 between the ages of 35 and 43. I’m old enough to be the mother of some of the moms of Number 7’s friends.
And being an older mom, I am going to be an older grandmother.
And I have the potential to have a shit ton of grandchildren.
I want to be fit enough to keep up with them. I want to be strong enough to hold them.
My grandma loved kids.
SHE LOVED THEM.
And I watched her physical condition slowly deteriorate over the last few years of her life to the point that she wasn’t able to hold Number 7 when she was a newborn.
I DO NOT WANT THAT TO BE ME.
So I exercise and stay active so that I have a chance of being the grandparent that my did is.
This is my dad a couple days ago. He’s 73 years old.
And he’s still doing headstands.
My dad isn’t able to do these things because he goes to the gym and works out every day. My dad never goes to the gym.
But he does get up every morning, take out his analog clock, and do five minutes of stretching before he does anything else.
Every other morning he does fifty-five push-ups.
I have no idea where he came up with this number, but clearly it works for him.
This is my dad at a water park last week. He’s the one on the left.
He’s got abs.
My dad is my active lifestyle inspiration.
He is the poster child for what your life can be like at 73 years old as long as you stay active and take care of your body.
He doesn’t work out like a psycho.
But he does something every day.
And I am hoping in 25 years I am able to do all the stuff that he does, whether it’s boogie boarding with my grandkids in North Carolina or holding a newborn or just having fun playing a round of golf with my buddies.
This is why I developed Not Your Average Fitness Course.
Because I want to encourage, motivate, and help women to become more active and to lead healthier lifestyles. I want to help you maintain or improve the quality of your life for as long as possible!
One of the participants of the most recent course, who (finally!) started using the free gym and attending free fitness classes where she works on her lunch break told us something one of her instructors said to everyone during a class:
Sitting is the new cancer.
YES.
Sitting and working at computers and having smart phones and iPads and laptops and WiFi and bluetooth and remotes and apps and apps and apps and immediate access to everything from banking to grocery shopping to taking books out of the library has increased the amount of time we mindlessly spend on our butts and decreased the amount of time we spend moving.
If you are a mom there is a good chance you also spend a good amount of time on your butt in the car. I don’t know about you, but I am basically a personal driver on weekdays from the hours of 4 pm to 9pm.
I can assure you that my dad spends zero time using technology, he doesn’t use a smartphone, and if he needs to buy anything, he does it by getting out of the house and out of the car and actually moving his body.
If you spend a lot of time on your butt, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you never exercise, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you can’t remember the last time you walked a mile, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you are kind of active but want to be much more active, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you used to be in shape and now you have completely lost your mojo, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you haven’t gotten in a pool with your kids because you have no body confidence and you don’t want people to see you in a bathing suit, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you.
If you generally want to improve the quality of your life, Not Your Average Fitness Course is for you!
The next round begins one week from tomorrow on Monday, July 23rd.
If you want to develop a more active lifestyle, I really hope you will join us!
Chances are if you aren’t doing it now, you need a little help.
Take a page out of my dad’s book, and start moving your butt.
Your kids will be glad you did.
Your grandkids will be glad you did.
And 25 years from now, you will definitely be glad you did.
