Lost in Translation.

May 1, 2013 by not your average mom Leave a Comment

If you’ve been around here for a while, then you know multiple pregnancies did a number on my bladder control, rendering it almost nonexistent.

Last November I took care of that.

You can read about that here…

But for a quick recap, I had urethral sling surgery last November.

In other words, the doctor went in there and hiked my bladder back up to where it used to be before all these damn kids caused me to pee in my pants every time I did,

well,

pretty much anything.

90% of patients are able to pee about an hour or so after the procedure.

For 10% it takes a little longer.

For me, it took 5 days.

So for 5 days I had to drag a pee bag around with me.

Anyway, why the subject came up, I can’t remember.

But last week,  Number 3 asked me why I had that pee bag.

So this is how I explained it:

You have a tube inside your body where your pee comes out.

It’s like a straw.

After I had surgery, my body was a little swollen, so the straw was kind of pinched, and nothing could come out of it.

It took about 5 days for my body not to be swollen anymore, and then the straw wasn’t pinched, and so I didn’t need the bag.

“Oooooh. I get it now,” said Number 3.

So then a couple days ago, Number 3 mentioned diabetes.

I have no idea why.

I did have gestational diabetes with all of my pregnancies, but it’s been 18 months since I had to deal with that, so it kind of came out of left field.

The kids had heard the word many times before, and they had seen me testing my blood sugar hundreds of times, but I don’t think I ever really explained to them what diabetes actually was.

Number 4 said, “Diabetes is when your body has an allergic reaction to something.”

“Not quite,” I said.

“No,” said Number 3.

“When you have diabetes, you can’t poop.”

Huh? Where the hell did that come from?

I just looked at him.

He wasn’t done yet.

“You know, like when you had the pee bag, Mom.

And your vagina was all clogged up.”

drano

Yikes.

Looks like the Turn Off the TV Week activity for Night Number 3 is going to be a little biology lesson.
