I told you last Friday how I got invited to this conference called Mom Grows a Business which was founded and led by Patty Lennon.
Patty Lennon lives in my town, but I had never met her.
I kind of threw it down in that post I wrote last Friday…
Patty Lennon, if you are reading this, the pressure to deliver is on.
True to form, I got to the conference about 45 minutes late.
I missed all of Patty’s introductory speech.
I guess that’s where she told her story.
So I still had no clue who she was or what her deal was.
But she did deliver.
There were 3 main speakers at the conference.
Patty, and two other women.
They all own their own businesses.
They are all very successful.
And I learned some new stuff from them.
But one of the things I learned from these women is that I’m already doing a lot of the things that they do.
My problem is that I need some guidance.
Direction.
I need someone with knowledge and experience to tell me where to begin.
Because I have no idea how to capitalize on the foundation I’ve built.
I know the bricks are all there.
But they are scattered all over the place, and I’m not sure which ones to pick up first.
So let me backtrack.
I have no problem going to a therapist.
And I have no problem accepting help from my friends and community.
But for some reason, in the blog department, I’ve felt like in order to really say I’m a success, I need to do everything on my own.
No help.
At all.
I’m not sure why I’ve convinced myself of this.
I’ve also had this thing about people who say they are life coaches.
Life coaches?
Who the hell needs a life coach?
And what the fuck is a life coach, anyway?
And I don’t remember which of the three women said this on Friday, but one of them said something along the lines of,
If you want to be successful in business, you can’t do it alone. You need some help.
Bing!
That turned on a light bulb in my head.
So did the fact that each of these women had, at some point, or even still presently,
a life coach.
Hmmm.
Light bulb number 2 turned on.
Brightly.
Those were the two of the biggest things I realized as I walked out of that conference.
And I thought about it as I drove home.
What was this life coach thing I had going on in my head?
Michael Phelps has a coach.
Tiger Woods has a coach.
Derek Jeter has a coach.
A coach helps you transform yourself into a better swimmer or golfer or baseball player than you already are.
And you know who has a life coach?
Oprah.
I needed a coach.
Now Patty is not so much a life coach as she is a business coach.
A business coach who takes women owned businesses to the next level.
Which is exactly where I wanted to go.
She’s also a motivational speaker who “inspires women to go for their version of BIG!”
She really got me with that one.
I’ve got no problems going big.
And to be honest, I’ve always felt like I was meant to do big things.
Maybe that sounds conceited or arrogant, but it’s true.
I mean, what about me isn’t big?
My mouth is big.
My family is big.
Big does not scare me.
It just eludes me.
So I realized I needed help.
But I didn’t want just any help.
I wanted Patty’s help.
Patty isn’t cheap.
You get what you pay for.
There was no way in hell I’d be able to afford her.
So I thought some more as I sat in traffic.
What did I have to lose?
I wrote Patty a message on Facebook.
I explained to her my situation.
And I tried to persuade her first with alcohol and mom’s night out.
And then with free swim lessons for her kids.
I couldn’t pay her.
But maybe she’d barter.
I clicked send, crossed my fingers, and waited.
I wondered if I’d even hear back from her.
I did.
I don’t normally barter but my kids need swim lessons…
Holy shit.
Yes!
YES!
YES!!!
So to make a long story a little less long,
I have myself a coach.
A kind of big-time coach.
But even better than that,
I have someone who really, genuinely believes in me, in what I’m capable of accomplishing, and in my potential for big-ness.
And that feels pretty fucking good.

Even at 79, I have a coach for my art; in fact, I have several. Keep going girl; you’ll get there.
