You don’t need more willpower.
You need a reason.
Most people think they just need a better schedule, more money, a new planner, or a little more motivation to get going and stay consistent when they are struggling to make progress on a goal, habit or behavior.
But even if you have the most perfect plan, chances are you’ll abandon it if you don’t know why you’re doing it in the first place.
Your reasons for creating a new habit or making a hard change have got to be compelling.
Here’s the difference a strong WHY makes:
If someone told you that you had to earn $20,000 in the next 30 days or you’d lose your home, you wouldn’t wait until next Monday to start.
You’d go into overdrive. You’d brainstorm. You’d sell stuff. Ask for help. Hustle harder than you ever have.
Because the WHY is survival. It’s security. It’s keeping your family safe. That kind of WHY lights a fire under you and keeps you focused.
There’s a really important reason why you have that goal, so you’re much more likely to stick with it.
Not all goals are life-or-death, obviously.
But the stronger and more emotionally connected your WHY is, the more likely you are to show up and stay in it.
Whether your WHY is your health, your kids, your future, your peace, or your independence – get clear on it.
Your WHY is what keeps you showing up when the goal is no longer fresh and exciting. It keeps you going when you’re tired, frustrated, or bored.
It reminds you what you’re building — and why it’s worth it.
Without a WHY, every new goal eventually loses its appeal.
But when you have a strong and clear reason behind your new habit or goal, you keep showing up.
So if you’ve been struggling to stick with something, this isn’t about working harder.
It’s about digging deeper.
Why is this your goal? How will it change your life? Why will you stay consistent when it’s not new and exciting anymore? Who (besides you) is counting on you to stick with this goal?
Write your WHYs down. Write more than one.
Put them where you can see them. On a post it on your computer and in the bathroom on the mirror. Your phone wallpaper and your computer screensaver.
Make it impossible to forget why you are doing this and who you are doing it for.
Because when your WHY is strong enough, you will find the HOW.
