The primitive part of your brain doesn’t like change.
It likes comfort. Familiarity. The path of least resistance.
If you want to stick with a new habit, you’ve gotta use the evolved part of your brain to trick itself a little by making that habit look really, really good.
The more attractive it is, the more likely you are to follow through.
Watching a show while you’re on the treadmill?
✔ Attractive.
Drinking water from a pretty, vibey water bottle?
✔ Attractive.
Lighting a candle before you journal?
✔ Attractive.
Listening to a podcast while you walk the dog?
✔ Attractive.
Jamming out to your favorite playlist while you clean up around the house?
✔ Attractive.
Pairing your habit (or anything) with something you actually enjoy makes the whole experience more appealing and more likely to become a routine.
I’ve been doing this with meals – especially breakfast – for a while now. I put water in a pretty glass bottle. I give the kids options. I try to incorporate colors.

This encourages my kids to sit down for breakfast together and to connect. It helps them to eat healthier. It’s giving them the chance to develop some healthy eating habits.

The presentation makes breakfast much more attractive.

If you’re struggling with making a habit stick, you’re not lazy.
You’re human.
Sometimes humans need a little dopamine with their discipline.
So if you’ve been struggling to stay consistent, ask yourself:
How can I make this habit more attractive?
And then do that.
