I will forever be indebted to the sport of swimming.
It has taught me to push myself.
To set goals.
To be a team player.
To move out of my comfort zone.
It has given me strength, and comfort and friendship and even money.
It is doing the same for my kids.
Swimming has helped Number 3 to overcome some pretty significant with anxiety.
It has helped Number 4 channel her energy.
It has given both of them lots of fuel in the self-esteem tank.
Which brings me to my point.
The town’s summer swim team, the Muskrats, is in desperate need of swimmers.
It is not uncommon for swim programs to go through peaks and valleys.
To have big numbers, and then small ones.
So right now, the team is in a rebuilding phase.
It’s a great program.
It’s laid back and fun and the perfect introduction to the swim team.
Your kids don’t need to be great swimmers to start. They just need to be able to make it across the pool.
If they can’t swim all four strokes, or even three of the strokes,
hell,
if they can only do dog paddle across the pool, that’s okay.
The coach,
who is smart and funny and an amazing swimmer at UCONN and studying to be a dentist and is an excellent role model for Number 3 and who I’m hoping is single in 20 years because I secretly want Number 4 to marry him,
will take care of the rest.
You don’t need to make all of the meets.
You don’t need to make all of the practices.
If you will be on vacation for part of the season, no problem.
But give it a try.
Get a friend to try it with you.
It might be one of the best things you ever do for your kids.
I know.
Because it was the best thing I ever did for mine.
