There is a road in town I drive back and forth on like five times a day.
It’s a pretty well-traveled road for lots of people in town.
There’s a bridge on this road, and there’s been construction work on the bridge for the last week or so.
The bridge is basically cut down to one lane, and there are two construction workers at either end of the bridge telling traffic in each direction when to stop and when to go.
There has been a woman at one end of the bridge for the last few days.
I don’t know how old she is, but I’d say she’s about my age.
She’s petite and appears to be pretty fit and she’s put together and she wears headphones.
And she holds her STOP/SLOW sign with a massive smile on her face as she dances up a storm.
My kids are obsessed with her.
They love her.
They open the windows and hang their arms out and wave and give her the thumbs up.
Today on our way to swim practice, they all said, “I HOPE THE DANCING LADY IS THERE!”
She wasn’t there.
They were disappointed.
I told the kids how most people you see doing that job usually aren’t so engaged. Or energetic. Or friendly.
I mean, I can understand why.
It’s not the most exciting job.
And standing in the same spot for hours upon hours is tiring and hard on your legs and feet and knees.
I imagine it would really easy to be bored and miserable and counting the hours until you get to go home.
Or, you could try something different.
Like The Dancing Lady.
The Dancing Lady has been connecting with every single person who drives past her for days.
She’s interacting with hundreds of people every day. Maybe even thousands.
Her energy is infectious.
She makes you feel noticed and she makes you feel important enough to be acknowledged.
Imagine if we all approached the mundane bullshit we deal with every day like that?
Imagine if we all approached other people every day like that?
And imagine if we all remembered that we have the ability to affect lives no matter what we are doing… Parents. Teachers. Electricians. Coaches. Realtors. Plumbers. Nurses. Doctors. Lawyers. Contsruction workers… it doesn’t matter.
We all have the ability to really make a difference.
I’m not saying we should all start dancing 24/7, but we do always have a choice.
We can stand there and be miserable and make other people miserable, too.
Or we can stand there and be happy, and make other people happy, too.
Either way you’re gonna stand there.
Might as well take a page out of The Dancing Lady’s book and have fun while you’re doing it.

Great uplifting and motivational write Susie!!! So true so true. Putting a sticker on my board “Be Like The Dancing Lady!” Today and everyday. “ Even if you at first don’t feel it”! I believe it will change your attitude as the day goes on!!

Oh my gosh, she’s awesome…I saw she the day I took the high school kids to all the schools for the “grad walk”….the kids whooped and hollered when we went by. So fun! Then that afternoon on my way to WMS I passed through again…yup still dancing…I stopped, yup, right in the middle of the construction in a 40 foot bus, I stopped….and passed her a double fist of lollipops, I said “you’ll need a little sugar if you’re gonna be dancing all day”. (Oh my gosh you would have thought a gave her a hundred bucks lol) I thanked her for sharing her joy in such a fun way, and said how much the kids loved it…then the horns started beeping….”catchya later DISCO QUEEN….God bless you”
