Robbed At Costco

November 5, 2026 by not your average mom Leave a Comment

My parents are old school, don’t have a debit card, don’t like to use credit cards, and still use paper checks.

Like me, they love Costco, and they get gas there.

Since you have to pay with a card at the pump, my parents load money onto a Costco gift card.

Last week my 81-year-old dad went to Costco to load money onto his gift card.

He wrote out a paper check for $75 and gave it to the cashier who loaded the money onto the card.

As he was getting his receipt and thanking the cashier and doing whatever else he was doing, he put the gift card down on the little check writing shelf thing by the card reader.

And then it was gone.

He couldn’t find it. It totally disappeared.

The cashier directed him to someone else to cancel his gift card, get him a replacement card and load his $75 onto the new card.

The woman helping my dad checked the camera at his checkout lane.

There was a woman behind him in line.

She moved up right behind him while he wasn’t paying attention and put her purse on top of his gift card.

Then she swiped his card and took off.

I’m not sure how nobody noticed this, but I guess it’s easier to take advantage of distracted senior citizens.

The woman helping my dad asked if he wanted to press charges.

He was on his way up to my house to work on a couple things that needed to be fixed.

“I’ve got things to do; I don’t have time for that,” my dad replied.

That card-stealing chick is lucky I wasn’t there with my dad. I wouldn’t have been so nice.

Anyway, this is just a reminder not to put your credit/debit cards down on the counter and to put them right back into your wallet before someone shady steals them.

And a huge thank you to everyone at Costco for taking care of my dad.
