I introduced the younger kids to Home Alone this past Christmas.
Numbers 3, 4, 5, and 6 really like the movie.
In fact, they have been watching it over and over.
This past weekend we went to my parents’ house.
They live about a half hour away, and the kids wanted to watch it in the car.
I had a chance to really listen to the dialogue while I was driving.
I forgot that the language standards were a little more lax back in the 80’s.
It doesn’t take long for the word ass to make an appearance.
“Don’t say that word,” I said. “That’s a bad word.”
For the remainder of the ride, Number 5 was the bad word police.
“They said jerk! That’s a bad word!”
“They said shut up! That’s a bad word!”
“They said hell! That’s a bad word!”
She obviously knew the difference between words that were okay and words that weren’t, so I didn’t really mind her hearing them.
Yesterday I was up in Number 6’s room helping him get dressed.
Some days he wants help. Other days, he’s all about doing things himself.
I picked out some clothes for him.
I tried to help him with his shirt.
“Get the hell out of hee-yah, you filthy animal!” he said to me.
Huh.
I guess yesterday he wanted to get dressed by himself.
And I guess it’s time to retire Home Alone.

Thank you for posting this! My mom couldn’t understand why I was saying I thought this movie was inappropriate for my 4 year old nephew at Christmas this year.

SO true! My mom sent the Goonies movie home with us when my kids were younger and I turned it off 10 min in! The older PG movies are so much worse than the PG movies now.

These movies are classics. Kids need to know the difference between words THEY are allowed to say and words THEY aren’t allowed to say. Trust me they hear much worse everyday on the school bus!

I really think they just swapped out language for crude and vulgar humor.
