Our Christmas

December 26, 2021 by not your average mom Leave a Comment

We had a great Christmas.

It started with the thing the kids have been talking about forever…  monkey bread.

I didn’t make it last year and they’ve been talking about it for two years so I had to deliver.

My parents came up to the house and it was so nice to just hang out.

I tried to get a picture of the kids with the dog but she wasn’t looking the right way.

Then she was like fuck this, so that’s the best we’re gonna get this year.

At least Santa looks super cute in the background.

We opened presents with Grammy and Papa.

And then I managed to pull of a pretty big surprise.

My 16-year-old got his license a couple weeks ago.

This is a BIG deal.

Having another driver in the house is going to make things so much more manageable for everyone.

But not if we only have one vehicle.

I had been looking for a used car for a little while. I really wanted to find one before Christmas.

And then I wanted to suprise him.

All the stars were in alignment.

After several ups and downs, we found a car that passed (enough of) the tests, and we sealed the deal a couple days before Christmas.

By some miracle, I managed to keep it a secret:

Here’s the transcript of the conversation:

11 yo: NO WAY! OH MY GOSH!

12 YO: ARE YOU SERIOUS?

16 YO: This kid got me a car, Bro. (😂😂😂😂😂)

12 YO: Whaaa… huh..

11 YO: WHAT?

My Dad: WOOWWW (he totally knew what a faker)

11 YO: Why didn’t I get one? (😂😂😂)

12 YO: ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?

The moment he realized what was happening was THE BEST. I’m glad I captured it!

It was awesome.

We had pulled off a big one.

It was a complete and total surprise, and it couldn’t have gone better.

After that we ate way too much food and chilled out.

My parents hit the road around 6pm, and the kids and I watched a couple episodes of Ted Lasso (kids’ request).

Once everyone was in bed, I sat in my office in front of the fire and just enjoyed the view.

It was the perfect ending to one of the best Christmases I’ve had in a long, long time.

I know what it’s like to prioritize everyone else for so long that you believe it’s selfish to put yourself on the list of priorities. Forget even thinking about putting yourself at the top.

If this is you I’ve been there and I know it sucks and I also know there is a better way.
