The weather here in CT has been especially rainy, cool and annoying for weeks.
The kids’ last day of school was nine days ago, but it didn’t start to feel like summer until two days ago.
Yesterday Kasen and Marit were free all day until swim practice at 4 pm, and they had a couple friends over.
It was a spontaneous, old-school summer day, and the weather was perfect.
Around 2:30 I was out running errands, and Kasen texted me and asked if he could skip swim practice.
He was having so much fun with his friends. He didn’t want to cut it short.
Days like this are few and far between in the teenage years.
Family summer vacations, sports schedules, camps, and jobs make it hard to coordinate anything at all.
Forget spontaneity. That’s a unicorn.
So I didn’t hesitate to say yes and let him take the day off.
It won’t ruin his season. It won’t affect his college options.
More importantly, it also won’t make him resent swimming.
Longevity is what we are after.
There is a time for making sacrifices, and there is a time for flexibility.
Yesterday, flexibility – and being a kid – was the better choice.
