I guess the best way to teach my kids to be a responsible pet owner is by not getting them a pet. Not this year, anyway.

It’s Number 5’s birthday today.

It’s also Number 6’s birthday today.

They’re exactly one year apart.

I got a motorized fire truck off of Craigslist for Number 6.

He’ll love it.

Number 5 has been asking for “a real, live kitty” for about a year.

I was all set to get her one.

But we live on a really busy road.

A few years ago, we got a cat for Number 4 from the Humane Society.

She named it Winnie.

Winnie was pretty much the feline version of Number 4.

She was kind of a spaz.

And on about the 4th or 5th time she escaped from the house, she got hit by a car.

We were all crushed.

Last year, we discovered a kitten that had been living under our garage.

It had probably been there for about 3 months, and somehow, it survived all on its own.

Having been in the wild, the cat was weary of humans.

That was when we discovered that Number 6 is the Kitty Whisperer.

But no matter how good he was with the kitty, and no matter what that kitty made it through to survive the winter under our garage alone, she eventually attempted, unsuccessfully,  to cross the road, too.

Knowing all this, I was still determined to get a cat for Number 5 for her birthday.

I spoke with my husband.

He wasn’t so sure.

Number 7 isn’t so good about keeping the doors shut.

If you think it’s a good decision, then okay, he told me.

Great.

It was all on me.

I told my dad.

He loves animals.

And I think he’s the one who passed on his Kitty Whisperer abilities to Number 6.

I knew my dad would give me the answer I was looking for.

“I’m going to get Number 5 a kitten for her birthday,” I said to him.

“Oh!” he said.

“Are you going to get a regular one?

Or one that’s already been flattened?”

Hmmph.

Not what I wanted to hear.

But definitely what I needed to hear.

I guess that real, live kitty will just have to wait until another birthday.

Number 1! Please keep me there!

Our oldest has been asking for a dog for YEARS. She said everyone in her class got up and talked about their pet and she was the only kid who did not have a pet. Felling guilty, my husband and I promised her a goldfish this summer…at least it can’t walk out the door 🙂

Read your blog about giving ….and several others….

Please let me know if you are interested in lots of barely worn, but loved nerf guns, 3 or 4 window a/c’s or a gas grill which is fully functioning but no longer needed…..

My daughter has been asking also for a pet cat for her birthday last year. Eventually, my husband and I will hold responsible in taking care of ti should we decide to give her a cat for a present. But my husband I thought were not ready for that yet so we decided not to get a cat. We tried to convince him that we buy fish and aquarium instead. This way, we don’t have to worry much about taking care of them and my daughter enjoys looking at them and feeding them, =)
