Homemade (and Whole30 Approved) Taco Seasoning

June 2, 2016 by not your average mom 2 Comments

This is a super easy recipe for taco seasoning mix.

The stuff you buy in the packets is no bueno as far as Whole30 goes, because the brand I’ve been using (McCormick) contains the following ingredients:

Spices (Including Chili Pepper, Cumin, Paprika, Oregano), Onion, Whey (Milk), Salt, Garlic, Sugar, Potato Starch, And Natural Flavor

I had no idea there was sugar in that. There is seriously f***ing sugar in everything!!!

Just out of curiosity, I Googled the Ortega low sodium taco seasoning ingredients:

Yellow Corn Flour, Maltodextrin, Salt, Paprika, Spices, Modified Corn Starch, Sugar, Ancho Pepper, Garlic Powder, Citric Acid, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Onion Powder, Caramel Color, Silicon Dioxide

After checking out a couple different homemade seasoning mixes, I  made a few tweaks and tried out my own.

Most of the ones I saw use chili powder and red pepper flakes and oregano, but we didn’t have any of those which is fine because we are all kind of wimpy in the spice department, and nobody really likes much heat in their food.

So all you need for our special mix is 5 ingredients:

  •  paprika
  • cumin
  • garlic powder
  • onion power
  • salt

Perfect! Those are the spices/seasonings I use most often, and Costco sells big ass containers of them and I already had plenty of all of them.

I mixed those five things together and added them with 1 1/4 c water to 1 lb browned ground turkey.

(If you like more heat, add  1/4 – 1 tsp chili powder and/or red pepper flakes, depending on how hot you want it)

It tasted just like the packet stuff minus all the other stuff.

Super easy, cheaper than the packets, and a really easy way to make something that may be on your regular dinner menu a little bit healthier without spending any more time or money on it!

I’ve also discovered that if you add 1/2 – 1 tsp of corn starch per pound of chopped meat it thickens up the sauce just like the packets too.
I don’t add it to the big batch of seasoning though. I sprinkle it on top, stir it in and let it all simmer together for some taco Tuesday yummy goodness.
