What we had for breakfast last week

July 6, 2022 by not your average mom Leave a Comment

I don’t know what prompted me to post what I made the kids for breakfast last week, but I had fun doing it, so I just kept going.

Here’s what I posted last Tuesday:

Breakfast for five kids ages 10, 12, 13, 15, 17
(5 on the swim team, 2 kids @ morning practice from 5:45-7 am, 2 kids attending triathlon camp from 9:30- 12:30, 2 kids working at triathlon camp from 9:30-12:30)

  • 5 bagels
  • 5 eggs
  • 5 pieces of cheese
  • 1 pound bacon
  • 2 pints strawberries
  • 6 cinnamon rolls
  • 0 leftovers 😋Resting up before they come home wanting more food.

Wednesday Breakfast post:
Okay crappy presentation today but here’s today’s breakfast:
  • 5 peach/mango/strawberry smoothies
  • 1 pound bacon
  • 3 cups homemade granola
  • 5 cinnamon rolls (demolished before I took a pic)
The kids LOVE smoothies – I get the big bag of frozen strawberries and/or mixed fruit at Costco. I mix in some milk or half and half and a little bit of honey and I can make about 15 smoothies from one bag of fruit.

Thursday morning the kids weren’t home, so I didn’t make breakfast.

The three youngest kids have swim practice from 7:30-9 am on Fridays and then Race4Chase triathlon camp from 9:30 -12:30 after that (swim practice and camp are in the same place).

They don’t want to eat a whole lot right before swim practice and they don’t have much of an appetite early in the morning.

They already pack their own lunches for camp, so I like to bring them breakfast in between practice and camp but I don’t really love driving back to the pool.

Number 3 serendipitously got a job working for the Race4Chase program this summer. He’s one of the coaches.

And he’s also legally allowed to drive with siblings in the car now! WOO HOOO!!!

So he drives Number 5, 6, and 7 to camp every morning except Fridays.

On Fridays he and Number 4 don’t have morning swim practice and they can sleep in a little.

I made them bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, strawberry/peach/mango smoothies and chocolate chip pancakes.

(I use the Krusteaz just add water pancake mix from Costco)<

The younger three got bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel and extra big smoothies to go.

I packed them in an insulated bag, gave them to my oldest, and he delivered them to the kids.

We are working as a good team so far this summer.

Now to wash the dishes.

Saturday’s breakfast:

There’s an extra 12-year-old boy in the house this morning and kids coming and going and rolling out of bed at different times.
On the menu:
scrambled eggs
strawberries
sausage
pound cake
waffles
I usually do a mix of from scratch and pre-made/frozen.
I get ALL of this at Costco (no I don’t have a partnership with them – everyone knows I LOVE MY COSTCO but hey Costco – LETS TALK)
The pound cake is so good, and it’s $7.99 for 3 loaves – that will last for 3 breakfasts (if I keep the other two loaves hidden in the back of the freezer. Otherwise the kids will scarf it all down before noon). 😋
2lbs of strawberries was $2..89 (that will only last this morning) but that’s a really good price – I bought 4 lbs total so have some for tomorrow 🍓
I buy 5 dozen eggs ($10.79) which lasts about a week – we use a lot of eggs for breakfast and we’ve been doing a lot of baking (in lieu of packaged snacks) so they go fast. 🥚
Frozen waffles – $10.79/72 waffles – not bad and super convenient and versatile (will use some for dessert – they are so good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top 🧇
Frozen sausage $12.99/36-38 patties also quick and convenient. 🙌🏻
So that’s just under $50 altogether.
That’s $10/kid. and less than $2/day.
That’s not bad!
PS – not all the kids like all the stuff on the table but there are at least a couple things on the table that everyone likes. Everyone likes the pound cake. 😂

Sunday breakfast (I had voluntary helpers – Number 5 and 7 taught themselves how to make crepes while I made a casserole):

Crepes (made by Number 5 & 7)
Whipped cream (made by Number 7)
Berries
Toasted croissants w/butter and jelly (prepared by Number 4)
Egg/hash brown casserole (me)
I had half a bag of frozen hash browns in the freezer I wanted to use up, so I made tha casserole with that (eggs, hash browns, milk, cheese)
12 croissants from Costco are $5.99 – we had 3 today – I’ll use them for bacon egg cheeses tomorrow.
I buy heavy whipping cream from Costco ($4.79/quart) because when we buy already made whipped cream everyone eats it straight from the container and that pisses me off. 😂

Sunday was a really good breakfast.

It’s been fun doing this because the kids look forward to seeing what their options are gonna be, and they’re enjoying pitching in and learning a few things.

They aren’t enjoying cleaning up afterward so much, but we are working on that.
