Two days ago, I wrote this post about Patty, a young woman who took a chance and left a comment on a blog post I had written, which ultimately led to her leaving a really unhealthy relationship.
And I explained how she made a seriously brave decision, and moved into her new place.
And I listed some things that she needed in her new place since she basically had a mattress on the floor.
And then someone suggested that Patty set up a wishlist on Amazon.
And then I felt stupid for not thinking of that myself.
And then yesterday, Patty started to set up her wishlist.
I posted the link to it on Facebook.
And within two hours, everything she had managed to research and put on there so far had been purchased.
People commented on Facebook, “Tell her to hurry and add more stuff!”
So I just want to give all you non-Facebook followers the link.
I told Patty to add every single thing she could possibly need. Or want.
That maybe she wouldn’t get it.
But maybe she would.
She has a long road ahead of her still, and I just want to eliminate as much stress as possible.
I want to do everything I can to help set her up for success.
I want to give those little boys everything they need. And a few things they don’t need.
Click here to check out the wishlist!
I added the TV, DVD player, and Sesame Street DVDs myself, and I did it without asking her first.
Patty texted me:
Um… you added Sesame Street dvds.
Uh-oh. I had annoyed her.
I can take them off, I texted.
No, it’s so sweet, she texted back.
Phew.
And [my oldest] loves Sesame Street. And Abby’s Flying Fairy School, she told me.
So yeah. I really want someone to get them that TV and DVD player.
Not a necessity.
But her little man would like it.
A lot.
And just in case you think Patty isn’t appreciative or that she might be taking any of this for granted, I want to show you something else.
I got another text today that said, I got a package!!
She used two exclamation points.
It must have been something pretty big.
What was it? I asked her.
Beautiful, extremely absorbent dish towels! she replied.
And she sent me a picture.
The text accompanying the picture said, I have never been so excited about not having a dishwasher!!
How fucking cute is she?
Very cute.
And very appreciative.
And so am I.
Not cute… appreciative.
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped Patty so far.
I could go on, but I think that smile says it all.
Thank you all for making a difference.

I have been catching up on Patti’s story and I am in awe of all of the love and support! I love that there are so many good people in the world!!
But I wanted to ask, as a fellow mom of a special needs child, has she looked into or applied for long term care insurance for him? Every state is different, but it is federally funded, part of medicaid. She should be able to get it for him. It covers all of his medical, dental and therapeutic care 100% (or whatever primary insurance doesn’t cover). But it also covers things like diapers (after age 3 until he doesn’t need them anymore) and respite care in the home to give parents a break. (Such a tremendous help, especially for a single mom!)
She should also look into the Virginia Early Intervention Program/Services. They can help her get him involved in therapy for whatever he might need. They can also give her some guidance about getting the insurance.
She can also reach out through FB, there are hundreds (probably thousands) of groups, large and local, for parents of special needs kids!! They could be an invaluable resource! (And Down Syndrome probably has the BIGGEST support group out there!)
I don’t know if she needs any of this unsolicited advice, but just in case, I wanted to be sure she knew there is help out there for her!!
I’m so glad I got to read her story! Brave is a hard thing to be sometimes, she is an inspiration! And so are you! Soldier on, brave mothers!

Also, I think you should tell Ellen about her! She helps people like Patti all the time. It’s worth a shot! 🙂

Patty,
Sending some stuff your way. Just a hint, on Amazon, try to choose stuff that has Prime shipping as an option (usually a blue check mark will show). That way money can be spent on stuff instead of shipping for those that have a Prime Membership.
On a more positive note…. GOOD FOR YOU. WAY TO GO.

You guys are all so awesome. I wish I was in a place financially to help out or geographically to babysit. But since I’m not, I’m just gonna cheer.
GO YOU ALL!!! #Faithinhumanityrestored 🙂

This is very inspiring. I wish we had an organization that will assist single mothers who has to start new after leaving an unhealthy relationship,

Not sure if Patty had already added diapers and wipes to her wish list and they were perhaps already bought when I looked? If not, amazon has them! Maybe even consider adding some packages of future sizes you’ll need if you can find a corner to stack them in? You’re doing great – keep going!
