editor’s note: before reading today’s post, you may want to read this post for a little background on Number 3.
Number 3 is my worrier. (see above)
In addition to stressing over just about everything under the sun, he also gets car sick.
And bus sick.
So I drive him to school every day.
Everyday, we pull up to the front of the school in the drop-off line.
And everyday he asks me, “Mom, are you going to tell me when to get out of the car?”
Now that we are nearing the end of November, he’s asked me that question approximately 75 times.
In September, I didn’t mind. He was in a new school. It was a new drop-off procedure. It was understandable.
But now? Well, it’s really annoying.
And I don’t know that I’m handling the situation in the healthiest way for him.
Should I reassure him?
Ignore him?
Rig up some sort of Pavlovian apparatus in the car where he gets zapped every time he asks the question?
Lately I’ve been changing up my responses.
Yesterday when he asked, I told him I was going to floor it, and that he would have to time his exit at exactly the right time, and dive out of the car while it was in motion.
Like a stuntman.
He laughed.
But today, in retrospect, I think it may have been more of a nervous laugh. You know, out of fear for his life.
I probably wouldn’t have said what I said, had I known this would be our bedtime conversation last night…
“Mom, I read a book about gorillas in school.”
“Cool!” I said.
He continued. “Um, did you know that sometimes mom gorillas kill their babies?”
Um… HUH? What the hell kind of gorilla book was he reading???
“Yeah, if they have too many kids and they can’t take care of them all, then sometimes they kill some of them.”
Suddenly I went from this:To this:I think we have a little re-reading to do.
Oh, and does anyone have a copy of Gorillas in the Mist I can borrow?
