Well, she gets a 4 for honesty.

Number 3 and Number 4 had early dismissal on Thursday and Friday because their schools had report card conferences.

Since these are the second trimester report cards, not every kid has a conference.

Only the kids who are seriously causing problems or doing really badly.

First graders receive number grades on a scale of 1 to 4 for all subject areas and in “behaviors that promote learning.”

1 = rarely demonstrates/meets benchmark

2 = sometimes ” ” ”

3 = usually ” ” ”

4= consistently ” ” ”

Number 4 must have just squeezed under the wire, because her teacher sent home a note saying no conference is necessary at this time.

Phew.

But Number 4 didn’t know that.

Here is the conversation we had yesterday.

Number 4: Mom, are you mad at me?

Me: Ummm… should I be?

Number 4: Well, aren’t you mad after your conference with Mrs. O? 

Me:  I didn’t have a conference.

Number 4:  Oh.

Well, when you see my report card, you’re going to be really mad.

Me: How come?

Number 4: Well, you won’t be mad about everything.

I mean,

Math…4.

Reading…4.

Writing…4. 

All the school stuff I got 4’s in.

Me: Well that doesn’t sound so bad.

Number 4: No. The bad part is my behavior.

I get in trouble.

A lot.

You know — the talking and listening and following directions part?

Me: Yeah?

Number 4: pause…

…All 1’s and 2’s.

Me: That sounds bad.

Number 4: Yeah. You should probably ground me, Mom.

For like,

a month.

But just so you know…

If you do ground me…

I’ll be devastated.

And I’ll probably cry off about 2 pounds.

Huh.

Now there’s a Lose to Win strategy I haven’t tried yet.

I think I’ll save that one for these last two weeks.

And in the vocabulary and drama sections of Number 4’s report card, I think it’s safe to say, she also gets a 4.
