We all love This Is Us. And this is why.

There’s a pretty good chance you have heard about the television show This Is Us.

Everyone is talking about it.

Because just about everyone is watching it.

I was out of the loop until about two weeks ago when I got sucked in.

And I got sucked in hard.

I watched the first ten episodes in a couple days, and last night I watched the most recent episode.

This is the first show I am watching as it airs rather than bingewatching it a year or so later.

I’m semi-obssessed. And I know I’m not the only one.

But why all the hype? Why is it borderline addictive? What makes it so good?

There are plenty of reasons.

It might be because there is at least one character on the show we can all relate to.

It might be because it reassures all of us parents that even though we would take a bullet for our kids and even though we love them more than life itself and even though we are doing our best to make all the right parenting decisions, we are going to make some pretty shitty ones. And we are not alone in that.

It might be because we are reminded that no matter what our size, there is someone out there who will love the crap out of us.

It might be because it reminds us that it is never too late to salvage a relationship.

It might be because we get to see what Jess from Gilmore Girls looks like now that he’s all grown up.

And it might be because Justin Hartley is extremely easy on the eyes.

But the biggest reason we all love this show?

It’s simple.

This Is Us reminds us that we are all fucked up.

No matter how thin or how fat, how attractive or unattractive, how talented, wealthy or successful we are, we all still fall somewhere on the Fucked Up Spectrum.

Sometimes we are closer to one end than we are to the other. But we are all still on it.

This Is Us reminds us that no matter how perfect the exterior of everyone else’s lives seems to be, no matter how beautiful the family portrait or Christmas card picture, no matter how perfectly dressed our kids are or how perfectly decorated our homes are there is a pretty decent shit show going on behind closed doors.

Some episodes and seasons are juicier than others, but no matter what color, shape, size, or socioeconomic status we find ourselves in, we are all the stars of our own fucked up shit show.

And that’s why we love This Is Us.

Because when all is said and done, This Is Us is, well… All Of Us.
