I’ve been wanting to get back into swimming for a year or two now.
Not like just swimming laps during lap swim swimming, but swimming on a team.
Once you turn 18, there is a “Masters” league.
I had no desire to be a part of it once I was finished with college swimming; I needed a break.
For the past few years, though, I’ve had that itch.
But I’m considerably out of swimming shape. It’s been about 20 years since I have seriously done any swimming.
I’ve had convenient excuses not to actually do it.
Most practices are very early in the morning when all the kids are all home, and my husband leaves for work before the practice is over.
But recently a second practice started at 7:30. It’s still a logistical nightmare to get there, but I found a way to make it work two days a week.
Masters swimmers can be a little bit intimidating. Even to a former swimmer.
There are some psychos.
Hard core psychos.
So even though I have been involved in some aspect of competitive swimming for my entire life,
and was a swimmer on the best YMCA team in the entire country back in high school,
and swam on a Division 1 team in college,
I was still borderline petrified to join this group.
What if I couldn’t keep up?
What if I couldn’t make the intervals?
What if I got my ass kicked?
What if I looked like an idiot?
I almost didn’t go this morning.
I almost wussed out.
But I couldn’t find my phone to call my dad who was coming up to babysit.
Plus, I told a friend that I was going to do it.
I didn’t want to look like a wimp.
I had to do it.
And…
well…
I did it.
And I kind of kicked some ass.
I kept up with everyone.
Now, mind you, I wasn’t swimming with Michael Phelps,
but still.
I swam in a lane with two other guys.
I went third in my lane.
I realized before too long that I was faster than both of them.
Before I made it halfway down the pool I was right on their feet.
I thought about asking to go ahead of them.
Then, I thought better of it.
No need to come out with guns blazing on the first day.
There’s plenty of time.
I think I’ll save the ass whooping for next week.
