I am on the last day of a 4-day swim meet in Boston.
My oldest two are swimming.
Swim meets are very long. They are similar to wrestling tournaments and gymnastic and track meets.
The format of the meet is prelims in the morning, and then the top 20 in each event come back and swim at finals at night.
The prelim session starts at 9 am and ends around 1 pm.
Finals starts at 6 pm and ends around 8:30 pm.
You do a lot of sitting around waiting for your kids to swim for couple minutes. Sometimes not even one minute.
This morning Number 3 and 4 swam at the following times:
9:30 a.m.
9: 47 a.m.
10:30 a.m.
11:27 a.m.
12:20 pm
I had originally planned on going for a run between a couple events, but the time I’d need to save to get outside and then to get back inside in time to see each event kinda made it too hard.
Plus it was super windy here in Boston today and I didn’t really feel like dealing with the wind.
So I came up with plan B.
This is what MIT’s pool looks like:
It’s 50 meters the long way and 25 yards the short way.
And waaaay down at the other end of the pool is the fitness center:
It overlooks the pool, and it’s really nice.
And you can pay $15 for the day to use it.
So that’s what I did!
I watched a couple of my kids’ events from the treadmill!
And when they weren’t swimming, I caught up on some Schitt’s Creek.
It was awesome!
While all those people you see in the picture sat in the stands for 4 hours, I got my workout in.
I did 7 minutes on the elliptical while I waited for a treadmill to open up, then I ran 3.5 miles, and then I walked 2 miles.
And I’ll reach my goal of over 20,000 steps before the day is over.
In hindsight, I liked Plan B a whole lot better than Plan A.
And that’s not to say I wasn’t out of my comfort zone.
There were some people my age who were in the fitness center. And even a couple people who were older.
But there were mostly a bunch of young college students who were half my age and half my size.
Ten years ago I would have been focused on that, and it probably would have stopped me from following through with plan B.
Imagine how much of a bummer that would have been. I never would have discovered how great it was to work out during the meet and watch my kids swim at the same time!
So this is these are the morals of today’s story.
- Move your ass every day.
- Have a Plan B
- Move out of your comfort zone every chance you get. Not just physically, but emotionally.
When you do all that stuff you become a little bit stronger, a little bit smarter, and a little bit tougher than you were the day before.
