My parents were in the same kindergarten class.
Can you imagine?
They started dating when they were 14, and they were married by 20.
You don’t see that happen too often anymore.
Or ever.
So when they were 24, I entered the picture.
When I was a freshman in college, my parents were 41.
The same age as me.
Two years ago.
Part of me wishes I was a “young” mom.
No, actually parts.
Plural.
Like my back.
And my hips.
And my knees.
Yes.
I’ve reached that stage in life where it takes between 3 and 10 steps to stand completely upright without pain once I get up off the couch.
But lately I feel pretty good about how I look.
I mean, I did.
Until yesterday.
When Number 4 came home from school.
“Mom, why are you so old?” she asked me upon walking in the door.
So she didn’t even have both feet in the house, and the insults were already starting.
“Because you’re like older than all the other moms in my class.”
Serenity now.
I instantly went from feeling more attractive than I have in years to feeling more like this:
But Number 4 wasn’t done.
She must have sensed that I still had some self esteem left.
“Mom. All the other moms are like 37.
And 33.
And twenty six.”
I felt a new wrinkle forming on my face as she was speaking.
“Twenty six Mom.
AND YOU’RE 43!!!”
According to Number 4 I guess I’ve set some sort of old mom world record.
“Actually, Mom, you’re not older than all the moms.”
Oh, good. Some evidence of empathy in this child.
“You’re older than all the dads too.”
Or not.
Gotta go.
At this advanced age, it takes me a little longer than you young folks to get things done in the morning.

Gotta love kids. When my middle son was about #4’s age he told me my butt was wrinkly! No matter what size my butt is I will always know that is has wrinkles now:-)

Aaahhhh kids! I was in a similar situation growing up. My mom was 38 when I was born and in the 1970’s that was considered OLD. My sister was 16 when I was born. So many people thought my sister was my mom and my mom was my grandmother. So many kids used to say…why is your grandma volunteering at school today and I had to tell them that ‘grandma’ was my mom.
Just tell #4, yes you are older and WISER, too.

Just found your blog this morning through TMB, and I am hooked! You and I sound so much alike, and it is always nice to find that connection!

My husband and I met when I was 14 and he was 16. We started dating when I was 15 and got married when I was 23 and had our daughter when I was 26. I just turned 30 and I have been with him half my life. It definitely surprises people. 🙂

Hi there – I really enjoy your writing. I’ve been roped into the nominations for awards process for Bloggers and thought I’d share the love. If you want, you can share the award, if you don’t no worries… it’s all good.
And yes, 35 IS when it all starts to go downhill. I started having hot flashes at 36 and if I actually itemized all the things wrong with me? I sound like I’m at least 73.
Cheers! Heather
