Last week I wrote a post about how we are limiting the kids’ Christmas gifts this year to four things: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read.
And then I wrote about how after having a discussion with the kids, Number 4 thought about it and asked for “something that couldn’t be wrapped”.
She wanted to learn how to knit.
I was so excited by what she had chosen, and while I knew I would be able to come up with enough money to get her knitting needles and some yarn, I wasn’t really sure how I’d go about paying for knitting lessons.
And then the next day, I got this message on Facebook:
Hello Susie… I read your post about your daughter and that she wants to learn how to knit…I used to teach the kids at my son’s school how to knit…if you like I would be happy to teach her…I’m sure she remembers me from swim practice…I love to knit and it would make me so happy to teach her…if I’m right….it’s [Number 4]…she is a sweet heart….just let me know when to meet after Christmas… We will be home during Xmas break…
Holy cow.
And then tonight at practice, as I was walking down the pool deck, I looked out at the window from the lobby that looks out onto the pool, and I saw the mom who had sent me that message in the window.
I ran through the door and gave her a hug.
And then she showed me a basket she had brought along with her.
In it, she had some knitting needles for Number 4, as well as some yarn for her.
She also had a book with her, and she showed me what she planned to make with Number 4.
It took every ounce of self control not to start bawling hysterically right there in the lobby.
I have to say, I’m just blown away, and I can’t really even begin to describe how blessed I feel to have so many people who care about my kids living in this town.
I can’t wait to see the look on Number 4’s face when she gets her gift.
We might be paring things down more than ever this year, but I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for Christmas.

This post made me cry (again). There are so many wonderful people in this world. It is sometimes hard to remember.
