I planned on writing my post earlier today but I just didn’t get to it and now I’m really tired and I need to go to bed, so I’ll just share this story really fast.
Every Tuesday and Thursday I volunteer in Number 5’s first grade class for a half hour during their reading workshop.
Usually I get a list of kids who need help with certain sight words, and I spend about 5 minutes one-on-one with a handful of kids and we practice their words.
I was working with this one kid who was trying really hard to figure out the word there.
He was using all the strategies he’s learned… making the first sound, looking for chunks, streeeeeetching it out, but he was getting to the-, and that was as far as he could get.
So I finally told him it was there, and he just laughed, hit himself on the head with his hand, and said, “That one is a total rule breaker!”
That’s it. That’s my story. I know. It’s not anything crazy or hysterical or unbelievable.
But this kid was just so cute, trying to follow all the reading rules. And it was obvious that he’s really learned about what the rules are and I just love going into that class to help, and I love Number 5’s teacher and she’s getting married next year and I am just really hoping she doesn’t get knocked up and quit before Number 7 has the chance to maybe have her when she gets to first grade because she’s just the best.
So I’m feeling like my kid is being really well taken care of and I’m just happy. And grateful. And appreciative. Appreciative of good teachers. Great teachers. Appreciative of the opportunity to be able to go into school twice a week, to see Number 5 in her classroom, and to work with some kids just for a little bit. To get a tiny taste of that teaching experience every week. Because I miss the working with the kids part.
And it’s really, really nice to have that feeling where you are not stressing about your kid. At all. And it feels really, really good when you know your kid is totally happy and thriving at school.
And I rambling and I’m tired.
And now I’m going to bed.

Hi, I’ve been meaning to comment and thank you for a while now. I made the exact same Advent calendar you did and my kids (7, 8, 10) LOVE it!! And I love that I can schedule things around their activities. Tonight we get special mid-week Christmas TV shows and hot chocolate 🙂 I also signed up for the GYPO style challenge and am LOVING it! One of my 8th grade (male) students said to me today “Mrs. M, you are killing it lately with the fashion!” THANK YOU!!!!
