Having a teenage son is an interesting experience.
Sometimes teenage boys do things that make you seriously question how they have managed to survive as long as they have.
Other times, they do or say something that completely blows you away.
Number 3 is fifteen years old.
Swim practice for him started back up three weeks ago.
He swims six days a week. Monday through Friday he swims from 5:30 – 7 am.
He is not used to getting up that early that many days in a row.
The middle of week two, he said to me, “You’re so lucky.”
I asked him why.
“Because you don’t have to go to swim practice every morning,” he said to me.
“You’ll eventually get used to waking up early,” I told him.
“I don’t think I will,” he said.
This was after being out of the water for three months, so not only was he getting up as the sun was rising, but he was having a really hard time just getting through practice because he was out of swimming shape.
He was hurting.
“You don’t have to swim you know,” I told him. “If you really hate it, you can stop.”
“Bruh,” he said.
“Sometimes things go really well. Sometimes they don’t. I just gotta get through this. Then I’ll get to the good stuff. Then some bad stuff will happen. Then more good stuff will happen. Then more bad stuff will happen. Then more good stuff will happen.
It’s just the way life goes,” he said.
Like I said.
