We got a dog last September.
Her name is Stormie and we love her so much.
It’s basically impossible to walk into your house and ignore your dog.
Not just ignore her – it’s really hard to not be as excited to see them as they are to see you.
At least for me it is.
I mean come on. Look at her. She’s so cute.
Yesterday when I walked in the door Stormie immediately ran over to me and then I said something along the lines of “HI STORMIE!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?! I MISSED YOU!!!” to her.
And Gretchen said, “Stormie is DEFINITELY your favorite child. You do NOT say hi to us that way when you walk in the door.”
Yikes.
She was half joking and half not joking.
Even if she was half wrong and half right, that half right part isn’t good.
I want my kids to feel that I’m as excited to see them as I am to see the dog.
You’ve probably heard that Toni Morrison quote:
“When a child walks in the room, your child or anybody else’s child, do your eyes light up? That’s what they’re looking for.”
So maybe this is just a reminder for us all to be aware of how we walk in the door and greet our kids.
And if it’s not with the same enthusiasm that we greet the dog then maybe we might want to do something about that.
