Last night I was at Number 3’s baseball practice with Number 5, 6, and 7.
We were having a nice picnic dinner.
The fact that it was about 48 degrees out didn’t ruin it.
When it started to sprinkle, that didn’t ruin it either.
But when some ASSHOLE stood about 25 feet behind us smoking a cigarette,
repeatedly,
well,
that did.
So I posted this on the facebook page,
Hey Smokers.
I used to smoke.
I get it.
But smoking at a little league game is an a-hole move.
If you can see a child,
THEN GO SMOKE SOMEWHERE ELSE.
Now, when I said “If you can see a child…” I wasn’t implying that I don’t want my children to see someone smoking.
My point was, if you can see a kid, then they are going to inhale that shit coming off your cigarette and out of your lungs.
So, a woman left this comment.
I do not smoke but I do believe in others rights. Honestly, was your child hurt by this persons actions? Instead maybe use the situation as a chance to explain the negatives of smoking.
“Honestly, was your child hurt by this person’s actions???”
Are you fucking kidding me???
YES, YOU IGNORAMUS.
SMOKING FUCKING KILLS PEOPLE.
Hey Patti, this comes straight from the American Cancer Society’s website (http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/tobaccocancer/secondhand-smoke):
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS). Any exposure is harmful.
Would you like some more facts, Patti?
How about this one:
SHS causes lung cancer in people who have never smoked. Even brief exposure can damage cells in ways that set the cancer process in motion.
Here’s another one:
SHS kills children and adults who don’t smoke.
So, as for what you said next,
Guess you better put them in a bubble so they never see what the real fucking world is like. Give me a break lady. Tge world is full of peopke that choose other lifestyles than yours. Your children experiece far more unhealthy situations walking next to a running engine…
One, you are incorrect.
Two, I don’t have a problem with other lifestyles.
As long as they don’t fucking make my kids sick.
Or potentially kill them.
I don’t give a shit if you are a dude who likes to wear ladies’ underwear and high heels.
Come watch my kid’s baseball game.
The more the merrier.
If you like to wear a dog collar and get the crap beat out of you in the bedroom, have at it.
If you are a mom who wants to chew her kid’s food up and spit it into her mouth for her, be my guest.
Or if you want to whip your boob out and feed your baby, in plain view, I think that’s great.
Even if he’s three years old.
But if your lifestyle does something that can make my kid sick,
or dead,
well,
sorry.
THAT’S NOT OKAY.
And three, don’t call me “Lady.”
Lady.
And in response to your closing argument,
You guys are narrow minded. I aree smoking around young children is bad. But its up to ou parents to dicuss it and teu are they will be exposed to it sooner or later.don’t act like thant your child will melt If smell smoke. There are a lot worst th
um,
narrow minded???
Because I don’t want someone to do something that can hurt my kids?
Sorry.
That’s not narrow minded.
That’s called being a fucking mother and protecting your kids.
Hey Patti…
Why don’t YOU go live in a Bubble.
And take all the idiots blowing smoke on my kids in there with you.

Ugh! This is EXACTLY what happened at my daughter’s soccer game yesterday! I was ‘this close’ to going over and chewing the dude out! My kids know what smoking is, that isn’t the problem. The problem is them breathing in that harmful junk. If someone wants to kill themselves, then I say go for it and have fun, but don’t bring that mess around MY kids!

Yep. Like Daryl said, some smokers respond well to polite requests.
Others, not so much.
So I try to find a person who’s in charge and let them take care of it.
Then I don’t look like the snitch.
Plus, the people in charge should be on that anyway, as far as I’m concerned.

Bravo Susie! That was great… When I used to pick up 1 and 2 at school in Statford there were way too many smokers lighting up as the K-6 graders came out of the school every day…and each and every one of them were asked politely to put out their cigarette… I asked them whether they were 5’2″ and 100 lbs or 6′ 5″ and 250 lbs. Most of them reluctantly put out their cancer -sticks. But a few felt that this was an opportunity to exercise their “rights”, swear a little and try to get into a fight with me… one guy told me where to go and proceeded to blow smoke towards me as I stood next to him and politely asked him for the third time to put out his cigarette (I’ve been told to not stand directly in front of someone asking them to stop smoking because it is “intimidating” to them). It seemed destined for a newsworthy smack down when another Dad that was a union carpenter pointed a meaty finger at the sign that was 5 feet away from him and said loudly so that everyone could hear “read the sign asshole!” The smoker took one look at Phil and put his cigarette out. A few people started to clap and one of the Moms said thank you to me and told me that they had started to call me the “Tabacco Ranger”. Well there is a new Sherriff in town and her name is Susie….don’t f. with her. Especially if you have no idea what the f. you are talking about That means you;Patti or Bruce or RJ Reynolds or whatever your real name is.
One of founding fathers once said that a mans “right to swing his fist in the air ends at the tip of another mans nose” I think this would apply to smoking as well.
You are my hero Susie…keep on keeping on with your bad self.

That’s been my experience with smokers too.
Some have a conscience.
And some don’t.

Obviously, if she never bothered to learn how to type, then she didn’t put any effort into learning anything about secondhand smoke. Thinking is hard, you know?

This is awesome! I have a 2year old and I’m 5mos pregnant – I took a walk to the store tonight and I just became so angry at all the smokers I passed along the way. I was thinking – why do they get to decide what I and my unborn baby inhale.
Thanks for you blog – great reads!

I came back to this post because I just had an incident. I was on the way to the kids school for the last day picnic. I was with my toddler behind this man walking down the long walkway outside of the school. I smelled something weird but was thinking of something else so didn’t pay attention to it. Then he flicked a cigarette to the floor. All I could think was ‘oh no my sons been inhaling this smoke this whole time!. It fell toward my end but still. I said “excuse me sir, were you just smoking?”. He said “yes, it’s a bad habbit”. I then said “you haha you could have maybe told me, I got my toddler here”. He said “What did you say?!” I repeated it, but mind you I said all of this stuff in a very sweet giggly voice cause that’s just how I am. He ignored me,. No sorry I didn’t know, nothing. I wanted to say “a simple sorry would have made me feel better” BUT this guy felt he did NO wrong. So we get to the school from which he just walks in. (Without signing in as you’re supposed too). I walk by him and his wife and hear her yell “yea we smoke so what!” with her hands up in the air. I said to them as I’m walking by “I heard that” *giggling again sweetly*. She goes “Well YOU were behind him!! we have non smoking friends if YOU were in front of him he would have put it out, but YOU were behind him!!” screamed this to me, in front of, well all the parents and kids there. I was now more upset that she blew up this in front of not only my toddler but all the other children as well. She walked away still yelling, as I looked and told her husband “wow.. I am so sorry.. I didn’t mean to make your wife so upset.. I’m sorry. wow..” he just looked at me smiling shrugging his shoulders and said “she’ll get over it”. So I walked away, but knowing they had several family there after I could feel all these eyes on me. I wasn’t comfortable at all and ended up ‘missing’ all my kids moments. My toddler only got to do 2 games. and I didn’t take all the pictures I wanted to take. I was shaking and almost in tears over this. I guess I could have wrote this all on my own blog since it’s so long, but I don’t have a blog haha. But this post you made went through my mind the whole time there. How would you have handled this?
