I know you want to know how Alice’s first day went.
If you follow the Facebook page, you know she came equipped with a bag of crafts.
So that was good.
She folded laundry.
That was good.
While she was doing that, I made some banana bread.
Alice said to me, You know, I love to bake. I could do that for you.
That was good, too.
A few minutes before I left to take Number 3 and 4 to swim practice, Number 7 fell off her stool in the kitchen.
She had a mouth full of apple.
Alice doesn’t know us very well.
She had a little bit of a panic attack.
Number 7 was screaming bloody murder.
She wasn’t really hurt. She was more pissed.
But Alice was worried.
Afraid that Number 7 had bitten her tongue off in the fall, Alice was trying to get her to spit out the apple so she could look inside her mouth.
Number 7 is like Number 4.
On steroids.
There was no way in hell she was spitting out that apple.
Alice will learn.
So, happy that the first spill happened while I was still in the house, and with Number 7 recovered and back on her stool, I left for practice.
I got home at 5:50 pm.
Numbers 5, 6, and 7 were all seated at the table playing with Play-Doh.
None of it was smashed into the rug.
My husband had gotten home a few minutes before me.
He walked into the playroom, and I asked him if he had already met Alice.
Yes, he said.
I came upstairs because I didn’t hear anything. Alice had them all sitting at the table playing.
And they were silent. And cooperating.
I think he was in shock.
So I approved…
My husband approved.
But I wasn’t sure what the kids thought.
I found out during dinner when Number 5 said to me,
Mommy, why is Alice so Spanishy?
(She’s Italian).
I told her that Alice wasn’t born in this country.
I wasn’t sure if being Spanishy was good or bad.
But then Number 5 said,
Mommy, Alice was fun.
Phew.
I’m glad you had fun, I told her.
But Mommy? Number 5 continued.
She’s not as pretty as you.
You’re really pretty.
Yep.
All in all,
I’d say the first day with Alice was a pretty big success.

Reading about your family life reminds me of the Brady Bunch (an Alice included), except your life isn’t a TV show, and reading your stories are much more interesting!

Hiring help has to be tough, and I imagine you were beyond worried about leaving the kids with her! I bet it was a sigh of relief when you came home and the kids were on the their best behavior. I’m sure it will be a weight of your shoulders to know that they are with someone they like and you can trust is taking care of the kids.
