Number 4 took it upon herself to make valentines for everyone in her class.
I didn’t ask her to or even hint that she should do it.
I didn’t give her a class list.
I didn’t get her the supplies.
I did nothing.
Over the course of the last week, she worked on the cards.
Without a list, she somehow managed to make one for every kid in the class.
Each card was personalized and had a really cute message inside.
By Thursday night she was done.
She begged me to buy some candy to go along with her cards.
I couldn’t really say no.
She spent her Friday night finishing up her cards.
They were so cute. And cheerful. And awesome.
And then she bagged them up.
Friday night and she was all ready for her party.
Which isn’t until Wednesday.
I was kind of in awe of her.
I have never been prepared for anything that far in advance in my entire life.
Then she said to me,
“Mommy? When is the last time you made valentines for your friends?”
I couldn’t remember.
“I don’t know,” I told her. “A really long time.”
“If you want, I can help you make some,” she told me.
Huh.
Why rely on the grown ups for all the help?
I think I’ve been overlooking a pretty big resource.
And I might just take her up on her offer.

I have many warm memories of this holiday, and it’s always great to see cards made by hand! I think my mom simply bought cards from the store and we signed them. The stars really add an air of fun to them 🙂
