My bedroom is not an oasis.
It’s the one room in the house that never got any attention.
My bedroom when I lived off campus in college looked nicer than my bedroom now.
I’m not kidding.
A couple months ago I started making my bed every day.
It makes a huge difference in how my room feels.
This month in Not Your Average Tribe one of the self care bullet points I am focusing on with my members is decluttering and organizing.
A couple days ago the prompt for the day was for everyone to make their bed.
I asked the ladies to share a picture if they were feeling brave.
It wasn’t until I posted a picture of my made bed that I realized how pathetic and lame not only my bed but my entire room looks.
Here it is:
My blanket chest is cute (my dad made it) but the rest of the room is awful.
The room has a weird layout to begin with.
And it has a world record setting number of doors in it.
There are five separate doors in my bedroom.
FIVE!
It’s just a shit ton of doors!
Here are three of them:
The middle door is the door to the room (obviously) and the other two are closet doors.
Then if you notice on the right of that picture, there are two huge cabinets.
Those came from someone’s kitchen. They were redoing their kitchen and I got those for free.
I had plans to turn them into what looked like built ins and paint them and put the doors back on them.
That never happened — thank God because that would have been more doors — and I fucking hate them.
I use the f-word because I REALLY hate them with a passion.
The are like anti-oasis.
BIG TIME.
LOOK AT THEM.
They are horrible.
There are the other two doors in the room.
One is to the bathroom and the other is for another closet.
I emptied out the closet which is why my room has junk all over it.
I’ve actually been pretty good about keeping my room neat, but I haven’t had time to put the stuff I took out of the closet into its home.
I’m doing that tonight.
Here is that wall from another angle.
Ugh.
I hate looking at that wall every day.
It’s so ugly and so not calming and I’m ripping those fuckers out as soon as I can.
Here is my closet:
Also not ideal, but it’s actually pretty organized and decluttered.
But it’s not pretty to look at.
It’s time for my bedroom to get a makeover.
Project Oasis.
I’m gonna start with the stuff that can’t be hidden behind one of the five million doors in my room.
Here’s what it looks like when you walk in the door:
It’s not ideal, but it has potential.
I actually have a king size headbaord and footboard in my garage. It’s really nice, and I’ve had it for a few years. I got it from a friend who was getting rid of it.
I’m going to sand it down and possibly paint it.
Then I have some other ideas.
And I can’t wait to show them to you when I’m done.
Because I’m forty-nine goddamn years old.
And I deserve an oasis.

I don’t think your room is pathetic and like you said I see a lot of potential. Thank you for sharing your bedroom with us :). However, I do believe that light fixtures can really make a huge impact on your oasis. I would ditch that overhead light/fan thing and get a sexy chandelier or something.
