Three days ago I posted this little story on the Facebook page:
I didn’t really realize until that morning that Number 7 only had two pairs of shoes.
She doesn’t mind. She’s always had what she needs.
Until Monday when she had peed all over her sneakers.
Anyway, I posted that story just because I thought it was funny and because I think it’s so typical of the shit that goes down in all our houses but for some reason we still feel like it is only us.
Lots of people shared similar stories in the comments.
It’s posts like those that I think we all love here because we realize we are all just trying to make it through the day without peeing on ourselves or stepping in dog shit.
But something happened after I posted that story.
I was inundated with emails and messages and texts.
People all over the country and even in other countries wanted to give Number 7 their hand me down shoes!
Holy cow!
It was overwhelming and really heart warming. Thank you.
I went for a run and when I got back there was a bag on my mudroom porch. It had four pairs of shoes in it, and they were all the perfect fit for Number 7.
Just like Cinderella. But like eight times the number of shoes.
I received another bag of shoes today.
I think some people may be thinking How the hell can she only have two pairs of shoes for her kid?
Well, like I said before, she’s had what she needs. We didn’t really think much of it.
Neither did she.
And so when she came home from school on Monday I told her I had a surprise. I showed her the bag of shoes.
You would have thought I told her we were going to Disney World.
She was ecstatic.
She put on a pair of sneakers, and said to me, “Mommy! Take a picture of me in my new shoes!”
“Where did you get them?” she asked.
I told her they were from a friend.
She didn’t care that they were used. She was over the moon.
She said, “The next time I see her, I am going to say THANK YOU and give her a big hug. I LOVE my new sneakers!”
She loved them so much she asked if she could wear them to bed.
I let her. I didn’t care. I was just happy that she was so thankful for a pair of hand me down sneakers.
And that’s one of the reasons she only had two pairs of shoes. Because when she got another pair, she thought it was the best thing ever.
She was grateful. And appreciative.
She doesn’t take those new sneakers for granted. And that makes me feel like maybe, even if she did wear pee soaked sneakers to school on Monday, I might just be doing at least one thing right.
