My grandparents didn’t exactly have a healthy relationship.
Or a happy one.
My grandfather was not an easy person to get along with.
I wrote a little bit about him last Memorial Day here.
My grandmother, on the other hand, is a different story.
I would describe her as the quintessential grandma.
Sweet, thoughtful, caring, compassionate, hands-on, crafty…
She kind of reminds me of Rose, on the Golden Girls.
Sweet and cute.
Except not quite so clueless.
She has been just like a book grandma.
Or a movie grandma.
At least for me she has been.
But now she is dying.
Well, we thought she was.
She is 90.
But over the past few months, her health has been steadily declining.
About 2 weeks ago she really took a turn for the worse.
Two Mondays ago, hospice was contacted.
They set up 24 hour care with a nurse.
The doctor said Gma would not make it to the end of the week.
She was in her bed, and pretty much unconscious.
She had stopped eating.
She was being given morphine out of a dropper when needed to keep her comfortable.
But we were told she could hear us.
So people came to visit.
They sat by her bed and talked to her.
The people who couldn’t make it to visit in person called on the phone and the nurse held the phone up to her ear.
Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews all called from around the country to say their goodbyes.
Other people wrote letters which were then read to her.
Well I guess that pissed her off.
Because she’s now sitting out in her living room.
In her recliner.
Talking.
And eating.
You think I’m going to kick the bucket?
Fuuuuck that.
I’m not going anywhere.
Huh.
I guess she’s not as meek as we all thought she was.
Plus, she told my parents that she’s afraid my grandfather is going to have managed to make his way into Heaven.
And she doesn’t want to be stuck there with him forever.
So I guess she’s rallying.
My Grandma.
Gotta love her.
Not going down without a fight.
All of a sudden, it’s becoming clear to me where some of this Lose to Win drive has come from.
Thanks Grandma.
I’ll do my best to always put it to good use 🙂

No problem. That and autocorrect can be killers.
