Yesterday, out of nowhere, a freak thunderstorm blew through here. I was changing Number 6’s diaper when lightning struck so close to our house, that I could feel it.
I ran downstairs to check on the kids and then I checked outside. I was sure my car had been blown up.
But it was a power line right across the street that had been hit. It was on the ground, and it was on fire.
I know it doesn’t look that major. But it was a little more impressive in person…
The kids were pretty psyched. Well, except for Number 3. He was a little bit freaked out.
His reaction? “Mom. I’m only 7. This is not a good time for me to die.” And he wasn’t joking.
Number 4, on the other hand, was unphased by all the commotion.
Her reaction? “Mom, I guess this means we’re going out to dinner. I’ll go put my fancy clothes on.” She wasn’t joking either.
Number 6 was loving all the police cars, fire trucks, CL&P trucks, policemen, and firefighters right outside our window.
We didn’t go out to eat. We got a pizza and ate it by candlelight instead. And then we had ice cream for dessert since it was all going to melt anyway. The kids loved it.
We might have to incorporate candlelight pizza night into our weekends every once in a while. In addition to that, here are a couple other things I learned:
1. Number 6 is capable of destroying an “indestructable” army-issue flashlight.
2. We need to buy some more flashlights.
3. Number 5 apparently associates candles with Christmas. She wore her Christmas pajamas to bed last night, and she is pretty pissed that Santa did not make an appearance.
4. The moment the toilets are unable to be flushed, every child in this house will need to take a shit.
5. When a 2-year-old lofts a vinyl-covered, stuffed football into a candle, it will catch on fire.
6. My children, suprisingly, are not addicted to cable tv.
7. But I am.

Susie,
Christina & I jumped a foot off the ground – sounded like a cannonball
went off. Relieved that a tree didn’t land on your house or any power lines. So many lights from the trucks flashing into your house –
looked like “disco lights’ from my end -must’ve driven you crazy.
Saw the kiddies peeking out of the windows. Hope they had a good night’s rest as w/you.
