My grandma is one of those depression-era grandmas, so she’s pretty frugal and she saves everything. I used to think she was crazy, but now I’m starting to do the same stuff…It won’t be long before I’m smuggling ketchup and sugar packets in my purse…
So every now and then I’m going to pass along some of my grandma-esque, thrifty ways. You may roll your eyes at some of these things, but they save me quite a bit of money over time, and they are also some pretty green habits. Thanks Gma 🙂
Grandma habit #1: Save and reuse your plastic bags (and not just the grocery store bags)
- grocery bags — I use cloth bags for my groceries, but every once in a while I forget them. So I use the grocery store bags for things like lining small wastepaper baskets. I also use them to separate my christmas lights and to organize clothing I’ve stored in plastic containers (onesies, pajamas, shorts, etc.)
- bread/roll bags — I use these for stinky diapers. They hold in the smell way better than the grocery bags ( I got rid of the diaper genie after the 2nd kid. The bags to put in them are expensive, and Number 4 figured out how to get her hand in the diaper genie and pull out the poopy diapers anyway). I also use these to pack my husband’s sandwiches for lunch (he’s not so great about keeping track of or returning containers), or in the kids’ lunches, especially if they are going on field trips, etc.
- Cereal bags — I use these for sandwiches/bagels/chips in lunches too. They are super strong and kind of like wax paper.
I have a whole basket of all these bags in one of my kitchen cabinets. Now even my kids get them to use on their own. I can’t tell you how much it has cut down on the amount of sandwich and storage bags I have to buy 🙂
