Yesterday morning was the first morning I missed writing a post since I started this blog on April 22nd. I went to my cousin’s wedding near Boston on Saturday and stayed overnight. In a hotel. With no kids. I did write a post late in the afternoon yesterday in case you missed it (http://nyam.wpengine.com/?p=1420). It basically sums up my experience from the time I left until I got home.
If you don’t know who Dara Torres is, she is the oldest swimmer to ever be on an Olympic team. In 2008, at 41, she competed in her 5th Olympics and won a silver medal. I watched a video where she talked about her training regimen. While her training was important, she emphasized that at her age it was the recovery that was equally important in order for her to compete with the much younger athletes. And the recovery process includes replenishing and refueling, and “body work.”
Well, I tried to apply that knowledge and technique to my performance at the wedding.
During the reception, I kept right up there with all the youngsters.
And as soon as I got back to the hotel, I began the recovery process.
I sent my husband out to Sonic. I shoveled a large fries, chicken sandwich, and large coke into my body. The next morning I got my money’s worth at the free breakfast, and on the car ride back home, I ate an entire bag of potato chips. A big one.
I slept in until 8:15. When I came home, Number 4 gave me a “spa” which is a close as I got to any “body work.”
Well, let’s just put it this way. I’m entering my 23rd consecutive hour of heartburn.
I don’t know, give me another 3.5 years, and maybe I’ll be ready to compete again.
But it may be time to seriously consider retirement…
