In the wake of Friday’s tragedy, Ann Curry asked people to commit random acts of kindness.
And someone posted that on her facebook page.
And then a friend of mine read that post.
And she wrote a post about it on her blog, Diary of a Mom.
Which I read on Wednesday.
So yesterday, I added a link to the chain, and I committed a random act of kindness.
Actually, I committed 26 of them.
I copied exactly what my friend Jess did.
I typed up this little note (which I took verbatim from Jess).
I went to the store and bought 26 $1 scratch off lottery tickets.
And then I went to Number 4’s school.
I sat in the office.
Quietly.
I handed out the tickets to every person who walked into the office.
Some people looked at me like I was crazy.
Others were so preoccupied, they didn’t really pay attention or even look at what I had handed them.
One mom actually seemed annoyed that I had bothered her.
But one woman said nothing. She just put her hand on my shoulder, paused, smiled at me, and then walked out the door.
It was the best thing that happened to me all day.
Until I walked outside.
I still had about 10 cards left, but I had to go home because the babysitter had to leave.
So I took the remaining cards and put them on random windshields of cars in the parking lot.
I saved one for the custodian who had just pulled up in his truck.
I walked over and handed it to him.
“You didn’t have to do this!” he said.
And I looked at him and said, “Yes, actually I did.”
And as I walked across the parking lot to my car, he yelled, “Pay it forward, right?!”
He had a huge smile on his face.
It felt good.
Really freaking good.
And that became the new best thing that had happened to me all day.
So I plan on doing the same thing today.
I know everyone doesn’t have the money to go out and buy 26 lottery tickets.
To be completely honest, I don’t have the money.
But after a conversation with a couple friends the other day, I realize that I spend more than the average person on Christmas gifts for my kids.
So my kids are getting one less gift this year.
I am putting that money into my random acts of kindness fund.
They won’t know the difference.
But 26 other people will.
And when my RAOK fund runs dry, well, then I will get creative.
I can’t wait to do it again today.
And if you decide to join in the fun — and believe me, it is fun — I’d love to hear what you come up with.
Peace, people.
