It’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of the four thousand fundraisers the kids’ schools do every year.
And between the six kids who are in school, it’s just too much.
So I don’t participate in them.
Last year Number 4 came home so excited though about the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser her school was doing, and she was so relentless about it, that I told her I would help her.
She wrote a blog post and asked people if they would donate. She ended up raising over $400.
I remember last year I published her blog post the morning before we left for a swim meet. Every five minutes she was asking me to check her fundraising page to see how much she had raised. By the time the meet was done, she had already reached her goal. Number 4 lost her shit. It was awesome.
Number 4 came home with that damn Jump Rope for Heart paper again yesterday.
And she must have asked me 157 times already how much I was going to donate.
I wasn’t originally planning on publishing anything on the blog this time around.
But she’s been begging.
When I put her into bed tonight I told her I’d make a donation but that was it.
But I changed my mind.
Because while she is a handful and she exhausts me and sometimes I’m sure she is trying to kill me, I have to be honest.
Number 4 is the coolest kid I know. For real.
She’s fearless and she’s smart and she’s (mostly) honest and she’s beautiful and she’s so talented and she’s kind and she’s proactive and she’s independent and she doesn’t really give a flying f*ck what anyone thinks and, well…
I really want to be like her when I grow up.
And yesterday when Number 3 was farting on Number 5’s bed just to be a tool and Number 5 was screaming hysterically about fart germs, Number 4 was just lying in her bed reading. She was the only kid in the house who was actually doing what she was supposed to be doing without being told to.
And just in case that’s not enough, this morning she told me she wants to be like me when she grows up and raise money for people because it makes her feel good to help people.
My heart nearly exploded.
So she’s earned some help.
And that’s why I’m going to ask for yours.
I’d really love to surprise Number 4 in the morning with a whole bunch of donations.
I’d really like her to wake up having already surpassed her goal.
I really, really want to encourage her efforts to help people.
