Last week a kid in Number 3’s class brought in a really old Chinese coin to share with the class.
Like really old.
Like 1800’s old.
Like so old it was quite thin and delicate.
As the class full of 8 and 9-year-olds passed this very thin and delicate family heirloom around, they observed how…
… thin and delicate it was.
Apparently Number 3 felt the need to really demonstrate just how thin and delicate it actually was.
So,
naturally,
he snapped that motherfucker right in half.
Awesome.
When you get that email from the teacher with your kid’s name in the subject line, it’s not usually to tell you how freaking perfect he’s been in class.
When Number 3 got home that day, I asked him what happened.
Yes, he was being silly.
No, he didn’t think the coin would actually break.
I told him he’d spend the remainder of the day and night in his room, which he did.
I told him to write write two letters of apology, and to hand deliver them to both the student who brought in the coin and to his teacher, which he did.
I know he was mortified.
And I was embarrassed.
Really embarrassed.
His behavior is not acceptable.
He knows better.
But you never know with your kids.
Or someone else’s.
So just a heads up…
If you are planning on sending your child into school with an irreplaceable coin from the 1800’s,
or that flag that’s been in your family for generations and was hand sewn by Betsy Ross,
or the original Declaration of fucking Independence,
let me know.
That way I can make sure my kids are absent that day.

loll that coin getting snapped in half was only a matter of time in a class of kids!

That was my thought too. I just wish it was someone else’s kid who did it 😉

If you send something irreplaceable to school you should know the risk that it might get damaged/lost. I sent arrowheads that I found in Colorado when I was a kid (not bought…I actually found them when we were panning for gold). I knew the risk that they might get lost or broken (they were made from rock but they can still be broken) I was only worried that a kid might get cut with them…..the teacher decided to just let them look at them (not because they could get broken….which I told her if they do, they do but because she didn’t want the more spirited kids she had trying to stab each other)
So if the mom that sent the coin in was upset that it got broken….that’s on her. She/he should have known the risk.

I’m hoping that maybe she didn’t know her kid took it to school.

You cannot believe the things my students bring in! However, when it is breakable I do not let them pass them around!
