15 days ago I embarked on the first semi-major organizational task since school was shut down.
The playroom upstairs had been overtaken by American Girl doll stuff, and now that Number 6 is using that room for his distance learning, something really had to be done.
Plus the room had just gotten out of control and nobody could use it.
On Day 18 it looked like this:
and this:
and this:
What was once a cute little hideout had become this:
I wanted to find a better way to keep the AG doll stuff up there but also make the room useable for playing other things — like board games — and also make the environment much more calm, civilized and conducive to learning for Number 6.
Number 5 and Number 7 were really helpful with getting the room cleared out.
They went through all the toys and decided what to keep and what to get rid of.
They were really good about letting go of things they no longer played with or used.
Then we started reorganizing.
Number 7 was on book duty.
Number 5 was the cleaner.
And after designating a new home for all her AG doll stuff, she set it all up.
I hung up some Christmas lights to make it seem like an actual house in the space.
We had plenty of room to store the things she doesn’t use as often.
And we got the hideout space set up again.
Now the front of the room looks like this:
We have a coloring/craft/whatever area set up again.
The other side of the room now holds all the board games which were all over the house.
I found two Yahtzees (one box just had 2 dice in it), two Monopolys, two Sorrys, and two Connect Fours. So we got rid of the duplicates and now everything is in one place.
The ones we play the most are under the doll house, and then we have a bunch in the cabinet right next to it.
There is plenty of extra room for more games or whatever if we need it.
There is plenty of room to play a game now. Even if all the kids want to play together.
Number 6 is much happier now.
But my favorite part of the room?
The puzzle area!
I have been wanting to have a designated puzzle table for a long, long time, but haven’t been able to find a place that works.
Until now!
There is enough room for a big puzzle and even three trays to sort the pieces.
I am SO EXCITED about this!
Our little room is an awesome, cozy, functional space again.
And I’m really excited about it.

Hi Susie, could you share how you handled puberty in your girls, was it early or late? My daughter is 9 and is showing signs of puberty, I am concerned about will she able to continue the same sporty and active routine as late bloomers or could lag behind due to physical and emotional issues related to early periods and other harmonal changes!

Hmmm. I will think about that. But what I can say for now is that I wouldn’t worry about it! She will be okay however her body moves through it!

Thanks Carole! I love it and so do the kids! It’s one of my favorite rooms in the house now. 🙂
