A week from today, I will have (hopefully) completed the Boston Marathon.
This will be my fourth marathon. So it may not seem like this is that big a deal for me.
Let me tell you… It is.
I am not a great runner.
I am not fast.
And I am not one of those people who is really good but says they aren’t just to be annoying.
I’m really not a great runner. I am barely average.
But I really just enjoy running.
And I like a challenge.
And next Monday is going to be a seriously big challenge.
I know I’ve run three other marathons. But I trained pretty hard for those.
I intended to train hard for this one.
But the winter is not an easy time to train for a race.
Especially this past winter in Connecticut.
Between the snow, and the snow, and the snow, and more snow,
and my kids running a three-month long sickness relay,
the opportunities to train that I really needed were not there.
About two months ago, I was seriously contemplating quitting.
Like seriously.
But it’s for charity (CLICK HERE TO DONATE — I also still have a shitload of money to raise, but I’ll get to that after I make it through the marathon).
And I had committed.
And I don’t want to be a quitter.
Training was going so poorly that about one month ago I Googled “can you train for a marathon in one month.”
That’s how bad the training has been.
There weren’t a whole lot of helpful results for that search.
You know I’m big on encouraging people to move out of their comfort zones.
Well, I’m certainly walking the walk with this one.
I am not sure I’m going to finish.
And I’m not saying that to be dramatic.
I really don’t know if I’m going to be able to finish.
I just keep telling myself if my brother endured what he endured for half of his life, well, then I guess I can suffer for (hopefully less than) 5 hours.
But I’m going to have to dig down deep to get through this one.
Really deep.
This is gonna be all heart.
And balls to the wall, baby.
Balls to the fucking wall.
