After yesterday’s post, a reader was kind enough to share this on the not-your-average-mom.com facebook page:
8 Reasons to Make Time for Family Dinner
You don’t need to bother clicking on the link — I can sum it up for you.
But CNN and Health.com, you need to get your facts straight.
Now, I will give them reason #8 — It saves money, and #4 — portion control.
But let’s look at some of the others…
Reason #1 — Supper can be a stress reliever
“… finding time to eat with your family may actually leave you feeling less stressed.”
Reason #2 –Kids might learn to love their veggies
Um, they forgot to finish this one. It should read “Kids might learn to love their veggies. But they will probably just say, Do I have to eat that?”
At least they said “might.” But they really should have said MIGHT. Or MIGHT.
Reason #3 — It’s the perfect setting for new foods
They forgot to finish this one too. It should read: “It’s the perfect setting for new foods… to end up on the floor.
Reason #5 — Healthy meals mean healthy kids
“Studies have shown that kids who eat with their families frequently are less likely to get depressed [and] consider suicide…”
Yeah, but as far as their parents go, well, that’s a different story.
Reason #6 — Family dinners help kids “just say no”
“Eating family dinners at least five times a week drastically lowers a teen’s chance of smoking, drinking, and using drugs.”
They forgot to include that it drastically raises a parent’s chance of smoking, drinking, and using drugs. Simultaneously.
Reason #7 — Better food, better report card
“Of teens who eat with their family fewer than three times a week, 20% get C’s or lower on their report cards, according to the CASA report. Only 9% of teens who eat frequently with their families do this poorly in school.”
If this is true, then I need to prepare about 47 family dinners per week.
But there was more…
“Family meals give children an opportunity to have conversations with adults, as well as to pick up on how adults are using words with each other, which may explain why family dinnertime is also thought to build a child’s vocabulary.”
Well I think we all know, espcially after yesterday, that there is plenty of important “vocabulary” being learned at family dinners.
But it’s not coming from the adults.
And while I find their inaccuracies to be amusing, the funniest part of the entire article is the picture that goes along with it: THAT IS HILARIOUS!!!
They included a “What’s wrong with this picture?” puzzle to go along with their fake news report!
Here, I’ll go first:
1. The mom is sitting down to eat, and the husband is serving everyone dinner.
AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! That’s awesome!
Okay, now see how many more you can find 😉
Oh, and bon appetit.

I just started reading your blog and I am still catching up so this is the first time I have replyed to anything yet but I couldn’t resist with this one. I have two boy 9 & 3 as of a few days ago and I have never had a family meal like this ever. Let me list the things that are wrong with this picture
1) the mom has obviously showered, has on clean clothes (not sure who cooked that meal because everyone is so clean) & make-up, her hair is even done
2)no one looks like they are fighting or discussing something inappropriate for the dinner table, I have never had a family meal where everyone looked that peaceful and happy even when we only had one child
3)the food is all on the plates
Well I think that is all I have to say for my first comment. There may be more today as I get caught up. Love your blog!
