Accepting Applicants.

Yesterday we went to a 4th birthday party for one of Number 5’s friends.

The friend has a 6-year-old sister.

I think the mom is fairly young.

And the 6-year-old is the oldest child, so the mom is still experiencing some firsts.

Like the first loose tooth.

The mom pulled the little girl over to me yesterday and said.

“Look at this…

YOU would know.”

And she showed me the loose tooth.

And the permanent tooth growing in behind it.

“Is that okay?” she asked.

“Is that tooth coming in back there going to cause problems?

What should I do?”

I just looked at her.

Was she serious?

“Um.

Pull that thing out,” I said.

The baby tooth was pretty much flopping around in the kid’s mouth.

“But it’s slippery,” she said.

“Get a tissue and yank it out,” I said.

“So that’s not…

…abnormal?” she asked.

Sigh.

To be a naive and unjaded mom again…

It’s easy to forget all the things you worry about with that first kid.

Or when you have a daughter like Number 4.

Who yanked her own two front teeth out at the first hint of them being loose.

Months before they were ready to come out.

You know, so she could “cash them in.”

Yeah.

There really needs to be a parenting internship as a requirement for high school graduation.

And I know the perfect family to teach that course…
