Cooking with Number 4: Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Mini Meatloaves

August 19, 2013 by not your average mom 5 Comments

Tonight Number 4 and I made roasted brussels sprouts and mini meatloaves.

Here’s what Number 4 helped me with:

She drizzled olive oil on the brussels sprouts,

sprinkled salt and pepper on them,

and mixed them up.

They came out great.

Next, she helped with the meatloaf.

I showed her the 1 cup measuring cup.

She measured out 2 cups of ketchup.

I showed her how to read the measurements on measuring spoons. She learned what a tablespoon and a teaspoon are.

She measured out 2 tablespoons of mustard.

She mixed everything up, and separated out one cup of the ketchup/mustard mixture for later.

We ran out of cooking spray.

I showed her how to grease muffin tins the old school way.

I mixed up the meatloaf myself.

Then Number 4 employed the help of her sous chef, Number 5.

They used an ice cream scooper to scoop out the meatloaf into the muffin tins.

They did a surprisingly good job.

Yes.

Even a 4-year-old can do that.

Then Number 4 took that sauce she had separated out, and she spread it on top of the mini meatloaves.

They turned out great too.

The kids love these.

We’ve also started a cookbook.

I had an old binder that I gave to Number 4.

Last week I showed her how to make a cover on the computer.

She learned how to change the font, change the color, and change the text size.

She also learned how to center the text.

Then I gave her a couple magazines, and she cut out some pictures of food to add onto her cover.

Each time we make something,

I print out a picture, and she writes down the recipe.

I had some plastic sleeves, and we put them in those to keep them protected.

She may publish a book before I do 😉

That’s great! I add a little bit of honey to the same brussel sprouts recipe…my three year olds actually ate it!

Yum! I’ve done my meatloaf like this for years, and freeze it for instant grab and go lunches. It also works with tuna casserole but not quite as well.
Love the cook book idea – my daughter just might be starting one of those in a few years.
