Last night was Gretchen’s 8th grade moving up ceremony.
I don’t want to say what everyone else says about the days going slow and the years going fast.
BUT THEY ARE RIGHT.
I mean, this is where we were eleven years ago when I first started writing this blog.
She was only 3 years old.
And now, well…
She’s not.
So yeah. WHAT THE FUDGE.
How the heck is Gretchen already in high school?
Seriously.
This is nuts.
I’m okay with her getting older. It’s really interesting to watch your kids grow up, and I’m genuinelyl enjoying having teenagers.
For the most part.
It’s not the growing up I’m struggling with. It’s just how quickly it happens.
Back to the moving up ceremony.
Three years ago when Ingrid was in 8th grade, she had a Covid Moving Up Ceremony, aka a drive through, so it was nice that she was able to be at Gretchen’s.
One of the best things to come out of the pandemic is the return to outdoor graduation ceremonies.
I know the weather is always a gamble, but when you are inside and can only have two tickets per student, that kind of sucks.
The moving up ceremony has been at the town hall the last couple years. Families bring chairs and blankets and sit with their 8th grader.
Then they hand out awards and call up classes by homeroom and each student is announced and walks across the stage to get their diploma.
We had a little rain at first.
But it wasn’t too bad, and things cleared up after a little bit.
It was a little bit chilly, but it was nice that it was so laid back.
And the girls had a lot of fun together.
The past couple years have been full of change, and they’ve been challenging for our family.I’m really proud of Gretchen for the way she’s navigated everything, and I’m excited for her to experience this next stage of life.
She’s ready.
She’s been ready for a long time.
She’s a little bit closer to the edge of the nest every day.
Whenenever she feels ready to take the leap, I’m ready to support her and let go.
No matter where life takes her and no matter what she decides to do, we’ll always have her back.
Onward and upward.

Hi, I was wondering how you go about handling these kinds of situations ceremonies and such with your ex? My parents were divorced and it was always a stressful situation at occasions growing up if I wanted both parents there…. I imagine it must be the same for you…..
