I had a rough night last night.
I could not get to sleep, and at 3 am I was still awake.
This doesn’t typically happen to me, but there was just too much stuff going on in my brain last night and I couldn’t turn it off.
This meant I didn’t wake up early which meant I was about three hours behind on things, and the brownies, chocolate cake, and oatmeal cookies I planned to make to have this week weren’t gonna get made.
So, I delegated that to Number 4.
She likes to bake, so it wasn’t a problem for her.
Number 5 and 7 also like to help out in the kitchen and when they heard me ask Number 4 if she wanted to help me out they yelled, “WE WANT TO HELP, TOO!!!!”
Number 4 was feeling a little bit like a mom with eager toddlers. She came into my office and said, “Mom, can’t I just do it by myself?” It’s so much easier when I’m alone.
I felt her pain.
But I also know how it feels to be excluded from the fun stuff.
So I put Number 5 and 7 on brownie detail. Brownies from a box are pretty easy.
Number 4 made the cake and the oatmeal cookies.
This is the second time I’ve had all three of them in the kitchen, but this time I was not supervising anything.
They were all on their own.
And you know what?
They did great!
They cooperated, they cleaned up after they were done, and they were super helpful.
Number 5 and 7 made the brownies 100% on their own. The pan was kind of a mess, but they are getting more and more skilled in the kitchen.
After the cake was done I showed Number 4 how to make icing.
She learned something new today, too.
I am pretty good about letting the kids help out in the kitchen, but I don’t think I would have gotten to the you guys are totally on your own level for a couple years if life was still operating as normal.
So today I’m very thankful for the opportunities that we were able to take advantage of.
The School of Independence is in session.
And my students are kicking some ass!
