If there is one thing our current situation is affording many of us, it’s time to declutter and get to some of those organizing projects we never have the time to get to.
Today I was working on decluttering and reorganizing the playroom with Number 5 and Number 7.
And as I was taking some pictures for tomorrow’s blog post, a notification popped up on my phone.
It was from a friend who was also doing some organizing and going through old photos.
I know many of you know and follow Jess from Diary of A Mom.
(If you don’t follow her, you should. She’s smart and funny and awesome.)
We are old friends who went to elementary and middle and part of high school together until she moved away.
And she’s the one who sent me a message.
This message:
That is me on Jess’s dad’s boat, I think around my sophomore year in high school.
1985ish.
Yikes.
There are so many things to say about this picture.
Let’s start with my hair.
That is not a perm.
My hair is actually very curly.
The 80’s were infamous for big hair and bangs that stood straight up with the assistance of massive amounts of hair spray.
I never had that hair, really.
This photo was taken not long after my first hair cut ever at an actual salon.
I got all these layers so I could feather my hair back like Farrah Fawcett, but it was just impossible for me to achieve that look on my own.
Especially on a boat.
So I just said fuck it, and went with the curls.
But more notably, I’d like to acknowledge the body dysmorphia I had back then.
Because I never, ever felt good about my body in high school.
I thought I was kind of chubby.
And I look back at this picture and clearly I was completely out of touch with reality.
I even messaged Jess back and told her, “I always thought I was so fat back then.”
And she said, “omg no — totally fit and athletic.”
Ugh. If only I were that fat now.
But either way, I appreciated the Flashback Friday photo.
If you are also participating in the Great Global Clean Out, when you find old pictures of friends or family in the next however many days you aren’t able to go anywhere, share them with those people.
It was a nice throwback for me.
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane, Jess.
I hope everyone out there is enjoying some old memories, too. 💗
