One of the things I work a lot on with the members of Not Your Average Fitness Course is using time effectively and finding time in the day to exercise (because lack of time is one of the biggest reasons women give for not making exercise a part of their routine).
Recently I have been using an app called Rescue Time to help me track how I’m spending my time, because one of the things I struggle with the most is staying focused and on task when I’m working from home.
I start out most of my days determined to stay on track, and 47 open tabs later, I’m wondering why I’ve hardly gotten anything done.
I like this Rescue Time app because it tracks usage across all your devices.
Facebook can be a killer for me.
It’s tough because I use it for my online courses and groups, so I have to open it every day.
But so often I allow myself to get sidetracked by things that have absolutely nothing to do with what I’m working on.
Thirty minutes later I’m knee deep in awkward family photos or tattoo fails, and have accomplished almost nothing.
But those aren’t the things that get me the most.
The things that get me the most on Facebook are the groups I find myself in.
I don’t even know how I got into a lot of them.
I left all groups that had any political affiliations a couple years ago.
I was letting myself get sucked into so many fruitless arguments.
SO MANY.
I am much happier — and my blood pressure is much lower — without the political stuff.
Today I left some more groups.
You know which groups are worse than the political ones and worse than the tattoo fails and the awkward family photos and the People of Walmart?
The Facebook groups for the kids’ schools.
OH MY GOD.
They are the worst.
I had a friend today post something on Facebook which made me think of this. She said,
Facebook is not Google. Google is Google. Asking super easily Googleable questions on Facebook is basically asking your Facebook friends to Google them for you.
She is so right.
The school Facebook groups are the worst about that.
I have to admit that I have been guilty of this at times.
The school websites have the answers to just about any question you might have.
It’s really not hard to find the answers there.
But what really pushed me over the edge is the complaints.
The school Facebook groups are out of control with the complaints.
These groups can be useful. Occasionally.
But from my perspective they are mostly just destructive and massive timesuckers.
It takes one person to rile up an army of half-informed or mis-informed or un-informed people.
And then people are arguing over stuff and using up considerable amounts of time with ultimately no benificial outcome except to make life miserable for a bunch of people.
So today I took another step toward decluttering both my Facebook feed and my brain from negative stuff that in the end is not important.
And I left all the school Facebook groups.
I won’t waste any more time getting myself worked up over ignorant or inflammatory stuff.
I won’t start typing a comment only to delete it and then repeat that anywhere between five and seventeen times.
I took one more distraction out of my life and added a whole bunch of mental energy to my day.
Cause now I won’t be wasting it on School Facebook Group Drama.
And my brain feels better already.

Way to go! Sometimes my brain just gets full. I take a sheet of paper and write everything that is spilling out and over my brain. It is not a To Do list – or a past due list. Just a plain old brain dump. It helps when I empty it and then able to continue on my way.

Very good points. I am guilty of same. List to get done but get sucked into social media BS
