Number 6 (6 years old) and Number 7 (5 years old) share a room.
They are old enough that sleeping through the night isn’t an issue anymore, but young enough that they still want (and need) the whole bedtime routine.
I often wonder about other peoples’ bedtime routines.
Ours goes like this:
Get pjs on.
Brush teeth.
Make sure everyone goes potty one last time.
Read a book.
Turn off lights.
Sing Number 7 two songs while I rub her back.
Sing Number 6 two songs while I rub his back.
Number 6 then requires an extra kiss, hug, “knuckles”, high five, and then a kiss on each palm à la The Kissing Hand.
And then they are usually asleep within minutes.
I used to think that I was the only one doing the whole song thing, until I went out with a bunch of moms one night.
That’s when I learned that the majority of us moms have the same nightly song requirement.
The only difference is what songs we sing.
And I thought the songs I sang were a little bit odd.
Until one of the other moms told me the song she sings every night…
The theme song to Paw Patrol.
Ahahahahaha!!! I had a good laugh over that one.
So I figured, since I just put the kids to bed and was thinking about that, that I would share mine.
I have sung the same two songs to Number 6 and Number 7 for the last 18 months.
The same. Two. Songs.
Number 7 requests Raindrops on Roses.
And Away In A Manger.
Number 6?
Two rounds of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
These songs are fine now, in the middle of winter and not too far from Christmas.
But I gotta tell you, when I’m singing Christmas carols in the middle of July when it’s 90°+ outside, I’m sitting there thinking, What the fuck am I doing right now?
But there’s no way I’m gonna try and change up that routine.
Because it’s all about the routine, you know?
So anyway, I just thought I’d share that with you.
Now that I’ve Rudolphed and Away in a Mangered my kids off to lala land for the night, I’d really love to know what (annoying or ridiculous ) songs you guys are singing to your kids over and over and over again.
I’ll be reading the stupid sh*t you do for your kids while I enjoy a glass of wine.
Because Sunday night?

My oldest two sons share a room, age 4 and 5. For them it’s not songs, it’s stories. We read two books, brush teeth, pee, ask a question from Q&A a Day, then tell one story. But can I just make up any cute story I want? No. It’s always “Moana and Angry Birds fight off the Bergens” or “Transformers and T-Rex eat too much and explode while Joy dances with BingBong”. ????
I used to sing Thomas the Train and Sophia the First. Oh, and Dora. I’d almost put that out of my mind.
Star Wars imperial march and Mickey Mouse clubhouse theme….. two shows that couldn’t be more different but my 3.5 year old loves
Instead of Baa Baa Black Sheep, my 3 year old will often request Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep (or she’ll pick a favorite color or 2 to insert…I draw the line at 3 colors though!). My girls (6 and 3) request different songs though. The normal rotation also includes, Candle on the Water, Come Thou Fount, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the ABCs in French and English, and Jingle Bells 🙂
