For about two years, I’ve had a dream.
To host a weekend for women where they could make themselves a priority, break up the monotony of motherhood, and try something different.
To relax, challenge themselves, and have fun.
And I did it.
The first annual Not Your Average Weekend at the Interlaken Inn in Lakeville, CT wasn’t just a success.
It was fucking awesome.
It was everything I had hoped it would be.
And more.
Maureen and I headed to the Interlaken with a car full of goodie bags on Friday afternoon.
We were greeted with a nice surprise in our rooms.
Check-in went off without a hitch,
and it was followed by happy hour and dinner.
I welcomed everyone with a short presentation where I encouraged all the women who came to try something over the course of the weekend that scared the shit out of them.
The food was delicious.
A couple months ago, I got a Facebook message from a woman asking if “middle-aged, divorced women with grown children” could attend.
I told her that as long as you were twenty-one and had a vagina, you could come.
And that woman who sent the message did.
In fact, there were women of all ages there.
Including Number 4’s retired, first grade teacher!
A friend’s husband provided us with great music.
It wasn’t long before Maureen joined in.
Repeatedly.
Saturday morning I presented everyone with multiple opportunities to try something scary.
We had pole dancing classes. This woman was very hesitant to try pole dancing. She was scared. She “didn’t know how to be sexy,” she told us.
And then she fucking rocked it.
In fact, I was afraid we might not be able to get her off the pole. She was amazing.
We had fireside yoga classes with my favorite person from Manipura Power Yoga,
and really fun salsa classes (we all fell in love with Ildi, the instructor).
We all tried something out of our comfort zones.
We had a smoothie and snack break, an awesome lunch,
hand and foot treatments,
and massages.
Then, the fun began.
Again.
More dinner,
dancing and karaoke,
pool,
a little messing with the dj,
and the surprise hit of the night… the photo booth.
I met a lot of amazing ladies.
And wrapped up the weekend with brunch and the perfect Bloody Mary.
Today one of the attendees posted this on Facebook:
Okay, if you didn’t know about it or you passed on the opportunity this year, you MUST make the attempt to join us next year. NOT YOUR AVERAGE WEEKEND was amazing. I have not laughed, smiled, slept or eaten as well as I did at this event. So much fun – I feel energized, renewed and appreciated. Thank you to Susie and Maureen for a fabulous time.
Delicious food, foot massages, entertainment, Salsa lessons, dancing, karaoke and the photo booth, etc… I felt like a teenager again – responsibility free. Thank you, thank you . And thank you to the Interlaken Inn for gracious accommodations and awesome hospitality.
I am sore in places I didn’t even knew existed. My abs are killing me.
I don’t know if it’s from the pole dancing, or the planks in yoga class or the fact that I haven’t laughed that hard in a long, long time.
Maybe even ever.
It was an amazing weekend. I’m really proud of us.
And I can’t wait to do it all over again.
If you could use some help getting fit, my next e-course starts on March 9th.
Let me help you get yourself in shape now! Summer will be here before you know it!

You Fed Me. This weekend was filled with the amazing energy of dozens of women who were all there to relax and enjoy. No other reason, no other motive. We’re each going through our own journey and each deserve a chance to just let go of all responsibilities, all obligations, all expectations. It was the first time I’ve experienced true camaraderie of that size since middle school sleepovers – and no one froze my bra this time 🙂
With the delicious menu, incredible service, cloth napkins and ability to eat with a fork and knife while the food was still hot and not having to nag others to finish their veggies while cleaning up spills and then having to wash dishes – you fed me.
With the wonderful lineup of activities that we could try (or could not) from pole dancing to salsa lessons and yoga, you fed my sense of adventure.
With the camaraderie of the women and the ability to bring moms of all ages, shapes, sizes and stages together – you fed my spirit.
With the supreme comfort and coziness of the Interlaken Inn and the open, non-judgmental and fun attitude of both Susie, Mo and everyone else there – you fed my soul.
From the karaoke and dancing in my yoga pants (no need to get all dolled up?!), you fed me fun.
I can only see great things coming from this continued event, and from you, and cannot wait until the next weekend!
