What I learned in therapy today.

February 12, 2015 by not your average mom 4 Comments

You know those bitchy wives on TV sitcoms?

The ones who roll their eyes at their husbands?

The ones like Leah Remini on King of Queens?

And Patricia Heaton on Everybody Loves Raymond?

Well…

I’ve kind of turned into one of them.

Now don’t get me wrong.

I’m not taking all the blame for our issues.

I have reason to be annoyed.

Reasons. Plural.

But I am acknowledging my part.

Today my husband and I went to see our therapist.

And she pointed out to me, several times, where I was blaming and shaming.

I know I do it. Often.

But today I got called out on it.

And then, at the end of the session, my husband and I were each given an assignment to do something out of our comfort zone for this next week.

And you know what my assignment is?

To be nice to my husband.

Yes.

Being nice to my husband is out of my comfort zone at this point.

Being a bitch has become comfortable.

Not good.

Again, at times I’ve got reason.

But not all the time. And that’s the point to which I have gotten.

All Bitch, all the time.

So yeah.

I just wanted to share that.

I’m Susie.

And I’m a bitch to my husband.

And that doesn’t make me feel good about myself.

So starting tonight, that’s going to change.

Listen….if you can stop yelling at your kids, you can be nice to your husband.

Think of it the same way you did that…..you got better results when you stopped yelling right?

Maybe you will get better results out of the husband if you are nice……

You can do it, and, speaking from a husband’s point of view (even when we’ve deserved it), it will make a huge difference. It takes a lot of humility to admit to having a negative attitude and wanting to change, so I applaud you for taking this step.
