No means no. Sometimes. Sort of.

To write about this, or not to write about this…

That is the question.

But.

Well.

I can’t help myself…

There was a clip from Good Morning America on the internet yesterday.  It was about a 9-year-old girl who lost 66 pounds in less than a year.

First, let me be clear.

Yes, I think this little girl is inspiring.

It’s hard enough to lose the lb’s when you are an adult and you understand the ramifications of being overweight.

So for a kid, who probably has trouble really grasping that concept, well, that’s really impressive.

Trust me, I get it.

I think that kid is gonna go far.

But isn’t there anyone who has a problem with the parents?

Look.  I’m glad they got their shit together.  I’m glad they made a change as a family to live a healthier lifestyle.

But I have a problem with this quote from the dad…

“Don’t be afraid to do the tough love.  It’s worth it in the long run.”

Tough love?

Um, is not allowing your 9-year-old, who weighs 186 pounds, to continue to eat a bunch of crap really tough love?

Isn’t that just called… I don’t know…

Parenting?

Last night I was watching Dana Carvey do a stand-up routine on parenting.

I couldn’t find a way to summarize what he said.

So you’ll just have to watch this clip.

It’s about 4 minutes long.

But it’s hilarious.  And worth it.

And it basically sums up the point I’m trying to make.

If you don’t have time to watch it now, please, watch it later when you have 4 spare minutes.

And believe me, when your kid is begging, and whining, and crying, and negotiating, endlessly… I get it.

But not eating that cookie or buying that toy or turning that Wii off is not going to kill your child.

You might, if they don’t shut up…

But telling them no isn’t depriving them.

Sometimes it’s telling them yes that is.

I could watch that all day long. I laugh out loud every single time.
